Dude Briggs, Props on a Mulie Kill at Meredith with a bow. That doesn't happen often.

Hiked in from Plum Creek ramp today, made it to the 3rd canyon before turning back. Did not see much. Don't know how you guys can make it to Evans hiking in!

Congrats on the bow kill. I got a nice one with a gun but haven't scored with a bow yet. I didn't go this year due to shoulder surgery. Has the water made it to Evans yet, as far as actually coming in the canyon?

Honestly, next year I plan on just hiking and staying out in Evans for the few days. It would be better than hiking in and out.

I’m going up there at the end of mulie season is it possible to camp at one of the trail heads then hike in early in the morning or is it better to camp in the back country

We've done it both ways.. as soon as you think you figure out the best way about it the mule deer teach you otherwise. We've learned to play it by ear and not be married to one area

DuramaxDude - I was out last weekend, thought it would be good weather wise but didn't see much. Lots of sign and tracks around, I suspect there is a lot of movement at night.

The youth program was out in force last weekend, lots of campers and young hunters. They camped in upper plum creek. I never heard any rifle fire though.

How far back west towards to river was the water? Is it at or a little past Martins Canyon does anyone know?

I hiked in from Martin's canyon week before last. I watched a boat go around towards Evans. Looked like the water might be in Evans now.

You hiked in from/at Martins Canyon or you hiked into Martins Canyon from Blue West or somewhere?

From blue west, the tiny cove just east of Martin's canyon to be precise. I went the normal route down the dirt road to the second gate and then on the trail all the way to Martins.

Not long, if I had to guess I would say 30-40 mins. Did not look like many other hunters had been on that trail yet, saw one other foot print and tons of deer tracks.

There is a spot on that trail close to where you park where you pass the gas pump. I have not figured out why yet bet there have always been tons of fresh deer tracks in that area. I have never hunted it or seen deer there.. just a LOT tracks. Dude_Briggs have you ever noticed that? If you know about where I am talking about, you have any clue what is going on there? Here I have the spot marked with the yellow pin: https://cdn.pbrd.co/images/GRvD4tZ.png

Thinking about hunting this area on the 6th for a just a en evening hunt. From the threads it looks discouraging, any recommended place where I can pop in with the bow? New to bow hunting so I have a big curve this year! Any help would be appreciated.

Not trying to be discouraging, it's just tough hunting. If you love "the hunt", learning your game and putting in your you time will love Meredith. If your measure of success is going home with horns every trip out, Meredith will be your worst nightmare. I've killed quite a few deer but I guarantee you this, the lil ol' mulie spike I killed there this year is my biggest trophy and only the guys out there hiking and chasing these same mule deer understand why

That's the truth. I lived 5 minutes from the lake for 3 years and never came close to killing something with my bow. I killed 3 deer total there, all with a rifle, and that's not easy to do either.

Spot on, dude briggs, MUCH respect for that spike! I simply tell my wife and family that I go out there for exercise! Been doing it for years, never a bow kill and only one doe with gun. I hunted really hard this bow season and didn't even get close. I did learn a ton and saw a lot of deer BEFORE they saw me and I am in much better shape now.

One thing to note, it is gun season starting Sat. first lite so **everyone** has to wear the hunter orange. I am switching to the gun and going to try and get a meat Doe Sat. morning.

Your best bet might be this trail up in middle plum creek, it is a nice quiet horse trail, you might find something on it. The trail goes on for miles, I usually just walk in slow and quiet and then walk back.

Ha! That's my post. If you use Chrome or Firefox, get the Photobucket add-in, and you'll be able to see the pics.

Here he is on the wall. The one to his left is a Cooke County buck, and the Euro mount is one I took at Matador on a draw hunt.

Nice log. I'd sure like to see a big mulie buck somebody has taken out there. The big bucks we've seen over the years were very tall but not really wide.

I hunted Saturday. I got in my spot an hour before legal shoot time. I heard something of deer size coming in on the trail I was on 15 mins before I could shoot. couldn't see anything and pretty sure it winded me and ran off. Really hot, lots of mosquito's and gnats. I heard a lot of Turkey south of where I was at. I was surprised at the # of hunters out, not as many as I thought would be. Only 1 truck at plum creek ramp. 3 trucks at lower plum and only 1 camping at lower plum creek. Need it to get colder for sure.

I'm sure the warm temp kept a lot of people home. It kept me from going to the lease.

Does anybody know if the creeks in the bottom of Martin's or Evans have any pools of water in them?

for those that have done it, how long is the hike in to Evans from Plum Creek? can you traverse the rims to get there, or is it basically straight through up and down the other canyons?

It's probably about 2-3 miles. Not sure where the water is as far as if you can cross the mouths of the canyons. It's easier to walk the top but it's also alot farther walking distance since you have to go around the back of the canyon to get there
