Cages are great.....but you can definitely tell they are eating by looking for the squared off ends of oats or just stems of clover, etc....

You won't know exactly how much they are eating but if its short with tell tale signs of browsing...they are eating alot of it.

I've got a general question for you Sippy and the rest of the guys whom are implementing food plots, supplemental feeding, and other "herd management" practices. How are y'all going about making your decisions, are you utilizing your local extension agency? researching the internet? trial and error?

I practice what I learn in class and what i hear from biologist. Some of this includes internet research.

I haven't dealt with any of the extension agencies so far.

We saw 16 deer tonight and tiff almost got a shot off on a running hog.

All the deer were very spooky, I think the hogs have them screwed up.

Just got back, it is hot!

Wednesday i stopped by Gorman Milling on the way to get 1000# or corn and 1000# of 17% protein. Good prices and nice people there, and the feed looks good.

The Boss Buck went up with ease but the hole in the top is pretty dang small and you have to guide the bag into it and pour it pretty slow or you will end up with $10 on the ground pretty quick.

This morning we saw 5 doe and 3 bucks but no hogs. I plowed the acre or so where I was planning on planting milo but it was a brick. After 2 cuts with the chisel plow and 4 cuts with the disk the clods are still the size of softballs. The soil temperature is right for planting but I am going to have to wait for some moisture just to plow it, so I should be planting after the next rain.

Filled all the feeders and put out 2 Trophy Rocks at the feeders we call the "Hog" and "Griffin Road." I also put a camera at the "Hog" because that is where the most action seems to be. It will be like christmas morning when I get to check it next week.

Meanwhile my dad set up a protein feeder at his place about 15 miles North of mine in S/W Eastland County.

He killed a stud of a 9 pt on his 60 acres 3 years ago, and there were several shooters this past season that were 99% nocturnal.

Checked the camera at one of the feeders yesterday after class. Stupid thing turns itself off occasionally, so it only took for one day. Nice group of doe coming in and 2 bucks. The one broke off his antler, he hasnt shed yet.

Im wanting to do it, but am a little worried about resistance and dosage.

Killed 2 boars Wednesday and finally shot the squirrel that had been sitting on my spinner plate all day.

I went ahead and planted my Milo. 50# and 50# of 13-13-13. It had a nice seed bed but rain is nonexistent.

Just got back in, some pics from the past week.

I got the soil worked well enough to plant and got to use my new spreader. Hopefully we will get some rain this week.
Trapped 2 raccoons that had been hanging from my protein feeder. One nasty one didnt have a tail.

I killed the 2 boars out of a herd of 15-20, every time i thin them out they come back in triple the amount .

Not too sure, I will be sending off samples before planting in August.

I was happy to see these 4 bucks grouping up (one out of cam range already dropped). Should have some decent antlers on the young bucks next year.

you raise it up an inch they will just jump and grab on to tube....maybe raise it, put grease or some razor sharp 3 prong barb wire around the tubes

Happy Easter everyone!

Got about 5 minutes worth of rain yesterday. The turkey wouldn't cooperate but I did find a shed and a break off of a deer I have on camera. I also found one I plowed under last year.Name: uploadfromtaptalk1364772571822.jpg

Tiffany and I also took the opportunity to look at some parts of the property I have never been to. First we went to an old wagon trail that went to Fort Griffin, Fort Griffin Road. Lots of artifacts, ill be bringing the metal detector along next time.

Next we hiked up the back side of the property to an old indian camp. Found a few partial arrowheads, but nothing too complete. Heck of a view overlooking the ranch from up there!
