A coworker, a customer and myself booked an axis hunt this weekend just NE of Comfort.
This place is beautiful: an 80 acre high fenced ranch with all the amenities a hunter would want.
Got settled in this morning for my second hunt after last night. Realized the blind was in the wrong place and needed to be higher in elevation (this was a new spot). I moved it up and had eyes on probably 1/3 of this whole ranch. Saw a herd of 25+ axis twice but couldn't get a good shot. Enjoyed seeing them and watching the big buck in the herd.
This evening, I got settled in with a 6 pack and my .30-06 and within 30 minutes I had 5 does up high with me. Took the first shot I could get and centerpunched her right in the pump station.
The remaining does ran down the hill in front of me so I hollered at them, lined one up and CLICK... a missfire.
Happy to have my first axis ever. Never even tried the meat before. Skinned the hide off so that I can get it tanned. Looking for another in the morning.
Great jump start to a slow season so far.
