Default Thermacell?

I know there was a recent posting about the effectiveness of the thermacell and how some of you "wont leave home without it". Does it really work as well as they say? Im thinking about buying one myself since we've had so much rain. I watched a video of a guy testing one. He was standing in an area that had tons of mosquitoes. He fired it up, and after about 10 minutes he still had them fogging and biting him. Was that because there was so many of them or does it have to really really warm up? He kept saying that the slight breeze was affecting it. Has anyone seen that video?
Any advice or comments on how well it works or doesnt work? I want to get one before the hunts start up.

The wind does affect them in my opinion, but I think it has to be a pretty stiff wind. I love mine for what itís worth.

It works for me when the wind is not bad. I tested it by turning it on and off during a hunt and it did the job. Actually walked back to camp one time for mine because the mosquitoes were so bad after a rain, would do it again if I had to.

One of the best thing I put into my pack when hunting.

Make sure and buys in bulk and keep extra fuel & wafers with you. With they quit, its sudden and the shield is down.

I also got a case that holds it, extra supplies for it and has a clip. It helps.

Best money Iíve ever spent.

I turned mine off one morning during a hunt, a few minutes later the blood suckers started coming in. Turned the Thermacell back on, and in about 15 minutes the mosquitoes were gone again.

True believer here.

I would rather leave my release at home than my thermacell. They work. Great. I turn mine on when I start my walk to my stand. That way when I unzip my backpack when Im in my tree that baby starts working immediately. It is better if its under you I think. The vapors or smoke tends to travel up, then whichever way wind is blowing. I lean down and clip it somewhere near my calves where I can reach it. I wish I would have invented it. Id charge $99 and sell the heck out of em

We did a 17 day roadtrip for our honeymoon up north. Camping in a roof top ten part of the time, and the rest of the time spent in fancy hotels. We hit Glacier, Banff, Yellowstone, and the Tetons. The mosquitoes were horrible pretty much everywhere we went. Each night I’d fire up the thermacel for 10-15 minutes inside the tent before we got in. Then we’d get in, zip up the screens, and kill the thermacel. Didn’t see a single skeeter in the tent the whole trip.

I think I have 6 or 7 of them and they do work.

I have also been in the marsh with 2 of them running in a duck blind and the skeeters were landing and drinking the off off my waders.

Good grief man, have you been living under a rock???
These things have been out for years now. I have 3 now, just because I couldn't keep up with one. I never go in the woods without it, unless it's cold enough the skeeters aren't out.
Also, when the butane runs out, the skeeters will let you know!!

4 years ago, my son and I went on a TYHP dove hunt. We were the only ones with Thermacells, and we were the only ones that didn't get bitten by skeeters. As others have noted, they don't work well in the wind. We carry a spare one in the car, always carry extra fuel cylinders and pads, and I always carry a can of Repel as a back-up. They are well worth the money.

Good luck,

Dave

I didn't start using one until last year. They're great, I swatted skeeters for years! I usually sit in the stand until the skeeters start bothering me before I fire it up, unless it's a night hunt. I light it before I leave the house/camp on a night hunt in the warm months. You won't regret it. I've spent $20 on a lot worse stuff that didn't work anywhere near as well!

First time I ever use one was on a Canada bear hunt. I had already been warned about the mosquitoes and black flys so I had gloves and a head net. They were working fine, but just seeing the amount of bugs trying to get to me was nuts. I can promise you there wasn’t a spot on my body you could touch without hitting a fly or mosquito. I wanted to be scentless and not start the thermocell, but I just couldn’t take it anymore. Within 10 minutes after turning it on, the headnet, gloves, and long sleeves were off!
I was with a group of 5 other hunters. After telling my story all of them jumped in the trucks and went to town and bought one. The closest town was over 2 hours away! They are believers now too!
No doubt about it they work.

A little but have had deer and pigs hanging out while using it.
I tried the fresh earth smell and did not like it at all.
Why go through all the trouble to be scent free then put some weird smell out there?

They work. Too much wind they don't work. Too little and you have to be right next to it. In a blind they are awesome. Crack the windows in your truck after a duck hunt and the little boogers will crawl over each other to get out.

Just one of the products on the market that works as advertised! I don't know exactly how many I have, but I sure don't hit the east Texas woods without one in the early season.

There is another product that works just as well because it has the same active ingredient and works on the same principle. It's call Pic. it's those little green coils that look like the burner on an old electric stove. For those who are old enough to remember, they used to sell Pics at the drive in movie theater to put on your dash board of your car during the summer months when you had to leave your windows down at the movie because it was so hot... They're cheap and I use them too just about as much as the Thermacel... neat thing about them is they make a very consistent wind checker. You light them with a lighter or matches and they burn slowly like a punk used to light fireworks. One coil lasts a long time. I keep them in every pack and in my truck and UTV just in case... Academy sells them and there's at least 2 coils in a package...

Has anyone else had any experience with the deer smelling/spooking because of the Thermacell? Its the only reason I haven't taken mine to the blind. Like said above, I work too hard to be scent free, I am skeptical about putting a different scent out there... If the deer don't smell it, or if they are indifferent to it, I'll gladly take it.

I've had deer within 10 yards and my Thermacell was rolling. The deer are not worried about it.

I cant believe there is people out there without one still. I was skeptical on it at first but skeeters on a rice field teal was enough to try. That was easily 12 years ago and I have one for each pack now.

For the frugal hunter theres videos on youtube that shows how to refill the butane bottles

Never had deer or hogs spook from the smell. I have had deer do the old lift head/nose and sniff, but it didn't seem to bother them. If a hog spooks, I just know that it's still ME he smells and not the Thermacell that spooked him... I gave up trying to fool a hog's nose a long time ago...

One CAUTION: I advise against putting a thermacell inside an enclosed blind like a pop up... those fumes will do a number on you... What I do when deer hunting is set the thermacell just outside the blind on the upwind side so the vapors can sort of cover the blind and I put an Ozonics inside blowing down across the open window that I intend to shoot from... This combo seems to work best for me.
