    teardrop camper build

Been working on a little project for a while now and thought I would start a thread on it now that I am down from shoulder surgery for a little while. I have had a fascination with teardrop campers for a while now and decided I would build one for the fun of it and see how it turns out. Hopefully I get a nice little camper to take some road trips with.
I started with this old boat trailer as the foundation.

I got it home tore it down and redone the whole trailer. Took off about 10 coats of paint on the old trailer welded up any holes and upgraded the axle, springs, and wheels. I painted the trailer John Deere green as I am going for a country look. The trailer and roof of the camper will be done in John Deere Green and the sides will be medium to dark stained pine planking. Just seems these colors would be a natural fit together to me.

I then started on the flooring of the camper. I used 5x5 Baltic birch plywood for the floor and foam insulation in the middle of the floor. To undercoat and protect the plywood underneath I covered it in a diy truck bedliner.

For the sides I am using plywood with cutouts for foam insulation. Help lighted the trailer a little bit and keep it insulated some too. The design I am going with is a design I come up with myself as it contains different things from different styles of teardrops that I liked so I tried to accommodate what I liked all into one design. Now to just hope it turns out and looks like I have pictured in my mind.

My camper will have only one door on the passenger side and a big window on the other side. Since I am flying solo I didn't see the point of spending the extra moolah for a second door. Besides if I ever get a second half it will just give me an excuse to build another one.

Right now this is where I am at on the camper I have the interior cedar planking up on both sides of the walls. The second wall I am about to router off the edges and around the door but that will have to wait till my shoulder wants to work with me. I also have the roof spars shaped just waiting to be put together. I plan to post more pictures and updates as I go from now on when I can get back to building it. Hopefully soon.

Love the John Deere theme. Good choice on the 5' wide choice, I'm so glad I went with a 5' wide over a 4'. While your in the build phase, figure out your ventilation, it's a big deal on teardrops. You don't want asphyxiation or condensation issues.

I have a vent for the roof that has a bidirectional fan on it. The door is an 805 series I am going to order from Challenger doors it will have a window along with the large window on the other side. I am also thinking about putting another set of screened vents on both sides of the trailer that will stay opened. I want them screened so I can keep dirt dobbers out of the camper. Those should allow air to move in and out of the trailer year round and hope it helps on the condensation part you are talking about. Let me know if you think I will need more ventilation than that.
I went with the 5' because I am a big guy and this camper will fit a full size mattress in it perfectly.
