Is anyone planning for exotics on the weekend of SEPT 26th? I'm heading that way.

Mouflon or dancers. That's personal preference. I was thinking sheep though

There should be plenty of them running around at least for a few weeks until the pressure pushes them onto private land. good that you are making an early trip cause they will be extremely spooky after about a month. It will be interesting as to where they end up this year as there is not much browse in the usual areas they hang out.

I hunted 5 last year on the last weekend. They were moving onto the private to the west. I was hoping to get out to that spot early and see if the hunters would push them my way.

Good luck to all coming out to hunt Amistad this year. The 454 boat ramp is open however the 454/San Pedro camp grounds are closed. I cruised around the hunting areas and there are multiple vehicles out there. Pressure might be heavy is opening week.

The word I am hearing about area 5 is that a lot of the mouflon have already been driven on to public land. There are a lot of sheep so there should still be some roaming in the hunttable area.

Thanks for the report!
San Pedro closed for lack of use again? Such a bogus reason to close a campground, not like it costs anything to leave the gate open. I prefer being the only one in there.

No, we got there early morning and it was hard to find them. It is not like is was years ago when there were sheep all over the place. It definitely is not what it used to be, not even close.

Family friends have property just to the west of Area 5. We normally see 2 or 3 herds of 20-40 of them hanging around

I hunted Monday and Tuesday in Area 5. Saw perhaps 15 Mouflon Monday afternoon but they were already spooked as hell. One group of 5 was moving at a good clip and the group of 10 were at a full speed run around the face of a draw. Five minutes later a hunter came around the same corner. On Tuesday I saw a single ewe that was obviously looking to find the herd she had been separated from.

Sure hope it eases up a bit. My best friend is flying down from Washington state to hunt Amistad in early November, with me. Iíd hate for the area to be barren.

Rumor has it that the land owner to the West of area 5 was trapping them. I never confirmed that with anyone, but oh well, it is his property, there is nothing we can do.

Have you found the Mouflon more consistently along that west boundary? Back in the day, 17 years ago, they seemed to be more evenly spread throughout the whole area. This trip they seemed more along the center of the area, right next to the water.

Really hard to say. There are so few now that most of them stay on private land in my opinion. You are correct, years ago they used to be evenly spread all over the place. You could find them anywhere. I remember looking down into the deep draws and see hundreds everywhere, not so anymore. Sorry I cannot be anymore help.

Doesnít sound too promising. Now I may have to look for a Plan B for my buddy flying down. Iíd hate for him to spend all that money with very little or no opportunity to see animals. I holding on to the hope that pressure will ease up and the Mouflon move back into the area. Any ongoing updates would be appreciated. I live in Houston so itís not practical for me to go back and forth to scout.

I have continuously researched this area and continue to plan a trip. Half the stuff I read make me feel like it could be a good trip, the other half makes it see, like too much of a hassle to even bother making the drive.

I hope you have a good trip, it might just give me the kickstart I need to finalize a plan to go.

I've failed to have a good time on multiple hunts that I can remember. All had to do with crowds and other hunters being bafoons.

Well, if you can afford it, get a lease and have an expensive time.

Yeah staring at feeders doesn't do it for me, neither does sitting on a ridge watching guys 100 yard down from me yell at eachother across a canyon "THEY WENT THAT WAY!" but at least that's free.

That’s popular public land hunting. Sucks but have to make the best of it. Justletmein, my cousin and I had met y’all last year at the camp. Hope to see y’all again and good luck

Yep I remember yall, hope it happens again. We won't be down until after Thanksgiving but should be making more than a few weekends this year. Last year I was doing 7on/7off at work and that made for some awesome trips. This year I'm contributing to the weekend warrior issues lol. I have my strategies for weekenders now though.

I plea the 5th!

Actually I learned a long time ago I'm not good at intentionally stalking deer, so I don't bother. I do commonly walk up within bow range while simply walking to my planned hunting spot though and my bow is always strapped on my back when that happens. I've killed two doe walking into my hunting spot now lol.
