    DIY Concrete Countertops

I am just about at the point in my DIY barndo build where I need to start considering countertops. I have most of the cabinets built but lacking the island but that will come in time.
The home is not a showpiece and will be left to our girls when we pass and not concerned with resell. The Mrs and myself were set on having granite countertops but now are considering the concrete option. I am not opposed to doing them myself though they are a bit laborious.
I have been looking online and at videos and they seem to be a good option for the modern farmhouse style we have chosen.

My question is that anyone here have pros and cons on them? Maybe someone has done them in their home and can share info and pictures. The good , bad and the ugly? Do you use a batch made mix or store bought mix?

We almost did them, but finally decided on granite. A buddy of mine did them, and they turned out great. He bought the molds online for the edges, and just used a store bought mix.

I have them in my house. Used a contractor to do them, but if I ever redo them I would do them myself. Really easy to do. He had the mold for the rough edge that looks like broken stone. Then they have an epoxy finish. He messed up on the color so the second coat of epoxy has stain in it. Originally it was stained concrete with a clear finish. They have been really durable, but the epoxy scuffs some. He used the 5000 psi concrete from home depot.

You can use fiberglass insulation to create an edge, also.

I did concrete countertops on my outdoor grill station and they are great. They are fairly easy to do. Use melamine board to make your forms. I tried first using normal concrete and it did not turn out very well. So I tore those out and re-did it with Quikrete Countertop Mix. You can get it through Home Depot but they never have it in stock. I had to drive to North Dallas to get mine. I’m sure you can order it as well. I also a small metal rebar that I layer into the forms before I poured the concrete. Then I used the handle of a sander to vibrate the forms to get as many air bubbles out as I could. After it sets, remove your forms and stain. I used a Kemiko stain as they are based in Houston. Then I sealed it with just a concrete sealer from Home Depot. They aren’t perfect but I got the rustic look I was going for. Click image for larger version

                          DIY Concrete Countertops

Thanks for all the input. I will most likely be casting the smaller tops in my shop and doing the island in place due to its size. We are thinking that the gray of the concrete will give it the look we are after. Ultra white cabinets with Sherwin-Williams “drift of mist walls along with stainless appliances.

I would cast them all in place IMO. We used 1/2 plywood under the concrete.

rtarcher that was a good video. I plan on doing some outdoor kitchen counter tops so I think I will do them like in the video.
