Default New project truck

Picked up this 76 F150 w/460 automatic last week. I had a 76 F100 w/351 in HS....

No specific plans yet. Just need to get her home and running.

No dents or structural rust. Only have to replace the rear bumper. It got hung on a fence about 20 years ago.

Nope, north texas. Previous owner drove it 50 miles a day to commute to Dallas. In the 80's. Then it was parked in a barn on a regular basis until it was moved outside a few years ago.

Nice! My first was my grandfather's 75 Ranger with 390 and dual tanks in midnight blue. Been wanting to find one for the last few years but am putting it off until we move again, soon hopefully.

I had a 75 with the 390, fun truck. Only hard fix was the front end with that twin I beam and the King pins. Saw a car show on TV and someone was making some aftermarket front end stuff for those models. Good luck with it.

Aw man, that is my dream truck, I'm extremely jealous I rode a many a mile in a 76 Ford, going hunting and fishing with my dad. I will do the same thing one of these days, I want to build a 4x4 tho, that's the only thing that dad's was missing. He never let it hold us back tho, we went through some crazy stuff in that truck

Havent updated this thread in awhile!!! Brakes have been completely rebuilt, all new fuel systems from saddle tank to the carb, officially proved that the motor is toast, getting ready to pull the front clip to make better access to yank the motor and trans.

Ill try to post some pics later this weekend.

Had a 74' F100 4x4 in HS. Some great memories, like fitting 8 people in a single cab after a bon fire. And yes, I am of Mexican descent but the other were anglo.

Now the real trick will be how to make it better than 4-6 mpg
I don't believe I ever saw a 460 eng that got better than 8.
They do have a lot of down low pulling power.
Nice clean old truck!!!!

Sweet. I have a 75 with the 350 Cleveland until I rolled it. Then I got a 78 baby blue 150 with a 351 Windsor until it was totaled in a wreck. I loved those trucks.

In the late 80ís I traded an inflatable raft for a powder blue Ď72 with a 351M/400 and C6. It ran but with the stuck lifter it sounded like an old diesel. Yours is cleaner now than mine was then. Canít wait to see the finished product!

Nice! While the engine it out you ought to toss a Dana 60 under the front end. Put a 205 in that jewel and you'll be good to go.

It was not a factory Fuel Injected motor. It's a 76 motor that had a 4350 on it.

Nice looking truck, should be fun. Replacing the timing chain and cam should help it out a bit. All of the Ford big blocks starting in 72, they retarded the cam, along with dropping the compression to around 8:1 cr. If you wanted to make that thing run better, without having to buy expensive heads. There is at least one pair of the early closed chamber heads for sale on facebook market place. Those have 70 something cc chambers. The do a lot or the compression ratio. The D3 heads, which that truck should have, are around 98 cc, if I remember correctly. Advancing the cam 8 degrees or basically getting it back to where they were back in the late 60 to 71, which can be done with a common aftermarket double roller timing chain. Straight up on those, should put the cam straight up or close to it, really need to degree it. Then the other thing is to replace the big open chamber heads, with some early heads, then replace the valves with larger valves, that or get some good aftermarket heads. The AFR and the F460 are the better cheaper performance heads, either of those heads, will make huge jumps in power, over any of the factory heads.

One of the trucks I wished I had the most, was one I worked on many years ago. It was about a 76, black, short bed, F150. I think a XLT Ranger. But it had a factory 460 and a 4 spd. I wanted that truck bad, but the old guy who owned it, bought it new and said he would never sell it.

Good luck with the truck, looking pretty good so far.

I basically followed the 450HP recipe from Fordifiction, except for the EFI instead of a 750 CFM carb. The timing chain has been replaced (straight up) and the pistons used helped eliminate a lot of the "dead space" to increase compression. I don't have all the exact numbers yet but once she is up and running, she will be going for a dyno pull.

That truck is gonna be a screamer. My first car was a 71 Lincoln with a 460. Never lost a race. Cost me $10 a day to drive to school-run 2 1/4 mile drags at lunch and back home.
