Got my blind and feeders set up on a new lease (for me anyway) south of Sonora. First time to be on a lease in that area. Looking forward to deer season.

Welcome, you won’t regret getting on a lease in this area. The drive is the only downside hunting in Sonora but after the first few trips you get used to it. This will be my 13th year in Sonora

Spent a great weekend out west. Mid 40s Saturday morning and 32* Sunday morning. Made working a whole lot easier. Filled feeders, painted, found a few sheds and drank a few beers.
Things were green and looked good but its also drying out fast !!! Also a pretty good fire on 277 just past 189..... hope no ones lease is toast !

That's at an old pen without a feeder that we were just taking down.

Do any of you feed Alfalfa northeast of Sonora ? We put some out a week ago along with filling our protein feeders. I had the ranch foreman go by and check and after a week nothing has touched the hay even though they are pounding the protein. I'm sure they've never seen it before and I guess I need to spread some corn on it maybe ? Anybody have any input?

I am 3 miles east of town. It is bone dry here. Got maybe 1/16 last night.

I feed alfalfa when its really cold in the winter and the whitetail hammer it.

Did you have to do anything special to get them to eat it ? I just figured there ain't nothing on our ranch that's green except the mesquites and I figured they'd hammer it.

We've been putting alfalfa out on our place for a little over a year. This time of year, deer and exotics are hitting fresh buds and browse and show no interest in the alfalfa at our place too. Give it a month or two and they'll be hitting it. You might try pouring imitation vanilla on it. Lowes grocery in Sonora has the vanilla for $.99 a bottle if you forget to bring it with you.

We filled four 1,000 pound protein feeders of 5k acres and the deer plowed through over half of it in two weeks . Im afraid to see what the protein bill is going to be this summer!

No, I just threw a bale out on the ground at each feeder. The only thing I did to it was to remove the top wire and spread out the end a bit so it would be easier for them to start on. In about 5 days there would be nothing but stubble left on the ground.

I have only fed alfalfa when it was bitter cold out. I would assume that at this time of year there are other things for them to concentrate on more.

Landowner sent me a pic of his rain gauge that had 1/2" in it. It's a good start. I'd sure take some more. He texted me a few minutes ago and said he was listening to an axis buck bellow near our camp. Need to get out there soon!

It was still pretty green at our place off Harrell road last weekend. We saw a lot of axis. I bet the group we saw driving in at 11pm had 100 head in it. Then Saturday saw a group of 50 when I was heading to town. They will be in trouble once they rub their velvet off

Thanks. Water and timed protein is key. Hopefully we can wrap up most of the chores on the cabin before they shed out.

Talked to the Ranch foreman today and he said the deer finally decided to try the alfalfa and they must have liked it cause once he could tell they started on it they destroyed it. So I guess will take some more next trip

Well, it's a bummer of a morning. Been trying to hammer out the last details of a new 5yr lease with our landowner, and we hit an impasse. We won't be renewing our lease. If anybody knows of a place that's available, give me a holler.
