Too many hunters. The hog numbers are way down lately. It's going to get harder and harder to kill a pig out there. And I will call BS on anyone who says they breed so fast that it's not a concern.

Unfortunately most of the honey holes have been mapped out on this thread. Time to find some new places apparently.

Did some scouting and Iv seen a couple deer feeder right on the other side of a private property fence with heavy hog traffic on a trail leading under the fence to it but I think the hogs are just hitting it after dark

Yes, it is public land, but you can't just go hunt. You need an APHP, hunter orange and it's archery only for hogs.

Any word on if, and when, the aerial shoot will happen this spring? It looks like they normally do it around this time of the year.

Make sure you wear orange. Use Binos to glass thick areas of briars and brush piles for bedded pigs. Dont get in a hurry move slow and quiet. Trial by error. Don't give up on it. Learn as you go

Speaking of new areas. I have previously scouted Willis Creek (aka gate 4) on the West side of FM348. Two years ago there was not much sign. Checked again this week and found a lot more sign, and very fresh; looks like a sonder has moved in. At least one set of tracks with hooves 2.5 inches long. No cattle on that side of the road either.

I got into a huge sounder for about 30 minutes. Unfortunately they were in some high brush that was up to about the top of my head and my gear was continuously caught on the brush. I kept spooking them about 10m away (it sounded and looked like a stampede...) while trying to get a line-of-sight (I needed to be within 5m due to thickness of the brush); they'd run about another 10m or so; repeat. Anyway it was a fun time regardless, had a chance at a few shots but there was still significant brush in the way, so never took any.

Afterwards I was thinking of a better way to handle that situation. Anyone ever tossed something heavy over to their other side to try to get them to come towards you? Or maybe I should have just stay put and hoped that they wandered enough to get near me.

Yep Good mountain bike trails on both sides of the spillway heading into pecan grove.
Good path from FM496/nature trail gate all the way to the primitive camp.
Good path from FM358/gate 1 south into sore finger (just one difficult gully to ford)
I have ridden mountain bike from gate 6 to gate 7 but the path is convoluted.

Amazing how many deer you see while riding a mountain bike. Guess the noise the bike makes is not associated with danger.
