    Grimes County Boar

Saturday afternoon I headed to my Grimes County lease. It was hot and the wind was swirling, despite the fact that the forcast called for a SSE wind. I hadnt seen a pig or deer yet this season so wasnt too optimistic about my prospects. Right at dark I saw a nose poke out of the brush as a decent size boar came out. I got ready to draw as he sniffed a bit at the corn but 10-15 seconds after he came out he lifted his head and acted like he got a whiff of me. He trotted away so I drew real quick and threw the pin on him and hit the release as he was walking fast towards the woods. The arrow hit just a tad back and he bolted. I waited a couple of minutes and got down. It was dark now. There was a good blood trail and I figured he wouldnt go far. The brush is real thick, the fire that came through last year has the underbrush growing thick and nasty this year. I tracked him for what seemed like about 200yds into the brush sometimes on hands and knees, pushing my way through. I found several paper plate size puddles of blood but finally called it off after about an hr of tracking. Sunday afternoon I headed back out there determined to find him. I followed the blood trail, still visible due to the large amount blood. I followed the trail to the spot where I had given up the night before. Looking for blood, I walked to the left and looked up and there he was, less than 20ft away! I walked back to where I had stopped previously and couldnt see him. Of course at night it would have been even harder to see him. I usually weigh my pigs but since he sat all night I didnt drag him back, but based on pigs Ive weighed before, I figure he was about 175lbs.

The start of the blood trail. The brush is kinda thick.
