Confusing buck - help aging

Saw this guy this evening. Obviously a very young deer but his knee scars threw me for a loop. Looks like he might be promising, couple kickers on g2's. The first picture is him next to a spike, for reference.

He's either been praying or begging. Done wore holes in his knees.

He does look like he is sick. Or something. He's young for sure, and looks like he could be a stud if he can get to maturity. But something is going on with him to look that emaciated
