    Neck clearence

    How much is needed?

I went with Lapua 30-06 brass to form my 280AI rounds, during sizing the necks thickened.

Reamer print shows 0.3156 so what should I turn the necks to?

Four thousands under be fine, need to measure a seated bullet

single shot or repeater magazine feed ?

      .004" for s.s. , and .006" for a repeater

follow the math .... I would go with .006" clearance ; .003" each side

loaded round should measure .309" ... use a .308" bushing

      turn necks to .0125" ...... .0125" + .0125" + .284" = .309"

or listen to Johnny seat a bullet and mic the neck. Then start neck turning to desired thickness

I've trimmed 308 case necks down to .013. That cleaned the cases pretty good.
Have found some cases with various thicknesses, some .018 to .012.

What do the formed necks measure now? For a hunting rig I like to see 3 to 4 thou so maybe around .312. Have you been able to check a fired case out of that chamber? My straight 284 gives me a fired neck of .317 and my loaded round is .3135 +\- and shoots quite well just for reference.

Thanks guys, exactly what I needed!

Fired cases measure 0.315, formed brass with bullet seated measures the same so I will turn to 0.309 for this hunting rifle

What...no PPC days Blake of turning .262 clearance to .261??

That is one thing I LOVE about the Norma brass & and my .311 Neck on the Borden .280ai. No more turning. All their brass is .001-.002 under. Pretty amazing. It's soft & doesn't last long with my hot loads, but who cares...it's no varmint rifle.
