Best all around small dog?

What is the best all around small dog? My kids have been begging for a dog. Below is what I'm looking for.

Good with kids (6 & 10)
Primarily indoor
Fairly small
Least amount of shedding as possible
Would love to be able to take on the boat or out in the woods

What are my options?

We have a cavashon and he his a great dogs around everyone including kids. About 22 pounds and dose not shed. If you took him to the woods you would want to keep him trimmed Ours could not be a better pet.

I have a Jack Russell Terrorist that is a great dog. She is great with kids, inside the house and in the hunting blind. Excellent blood trailing dog also. Mine is more toned down since she is out with me everyday riding on the UTV and raised on a ranch. She does shed some but only if I do not brush out her coat with the FURminator on a regular basis.

We got a rescue Pug had him since 08...Been best dog we ever had.Loves kids and everyone.Not Yappey barks when he needs to.Not every time he hears another dog bark.not Hyper .He don't like Hot or Cold

I had to turn in my man card but I do love my miniature poodle. Very smart and energetic when needed or is just as happy sitting on the coach or in your lap. No shedding but do require trims about every 8 weeks. My son is allergic to dogs but the poodle does not irritate his allergies at all. He even sleeps in his bed at night with him.
