If you want to look really cool walk through there and don't brush off the spiders or webs. Just act like they don't even exist. Your kids will think you are super mountain man.

.....and they will wave goodbye as the spiders carry you off into the grasslands. No sir, I'll keep my spider stick. Those spiders are probably the reason I haven't been seeing many dove this season. They all got ate.

Scouted a few smaller units yesterday (crossing my fingers they won't be busy on Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Did not see anything that was alive, but I hauled out a few beer cans (seriously people?). I found TONS on pig tracks with a few deer tracks scattered about. Didn't notice and stands or cameras (if you see a giant human in a bright green shirt that's me lol). Hopefully we get some rain the next few days so I can get a better idea how active these spots are.

Got a few nice ones on camera. Hopefully I can get on one during season! Did some scouting last Saturday and found some beds and fresh rubs. Can't wait for next Saturday!

Man! After reading this thread and seeing all the pictures, makes me more confident about hunting here this year! This is my first year to hunt since moving from Commiefornia, I mean California, back in 2011. I did some scouting over the past weekend and covered about 8 miles between a few units. Found a couple that look a little promising but well see come season! Being my first time to bow hunt, I'm excited. I just bought my bow Thursday and now I'm down until season starts because my string broke on Sunday

Just come on out. I think there are around 20+ folks planning to be there. There should be some good information on public hunting, tactics, equipment etc.

This is the first go at this. It is an idea that has been tossed around the group for a few years now. With the influx of new public land hunters it should be great to help them learn public land etiquette and strategy. Hopefully it goes well and we can do it again in the future. Love that it will be on the Black Creek Lake unit. That way nobody has to worry about their spots being overrun by the group or deer being pushed out of a huntable unit the week before season.

I plan on going if I am well enough by then. Mostly to meet other hunters so when we yell at each other for ruining our setup we at least know who it is (jk). Really, though, it would be good to meet other hunters on the unit. Whitney has a get together each year and LBJ has kind of been a to each his/her own area.
Also, since I seem to fail at most other etiquette test, it would be good to know just how bad I am at the public hunting etiquette. Honestly, I'm surprised I could even spell the word the first try. |

What shop do you guys use? I just bought my Mathews Traverse last Thursday and while shooting on Sunday, the eyelet on the cam snapped. I took it back to the place of purchase and they are getting the cams replaced under warranty but refuse to replace the string unless I pay 180 bucks. I told them I wont pay that and to just replace the cams and I'll pick it up and take it to another shop. The other shop is going to charged me 45 to make a string and then he is going to work with me on tuning and make it all good since it broke while I was at his shop. I am real irritated that all this is happening right before season, but what can you do!

Me as well. I do use the range at Quail Creek off of 35W too. They've got a decent archery range and allow shotgun slugs on the 30yd for those who participate in the general season.

The unit names came from the families who lived on the land prior to federal ownership. The Grasslands were in the southern end of the "Dust Bowl". Much of the topsoil had washed away due to poor agricultural practices. Many families could no longer make a living off the land and moved away.
Congress passed the Bankhead-Jones Farm Tenant Act in 1937. It was initially set up as a Land Utilization Project. The intent was to acquire 1.5 million acres in Wise and Montague Counties. With the advent of WWII the feds stopped the acquisition program to fund the war effort. That's the reason for the checkerboard ownership. The Soil Conservation Service was the initial land management agency. The Forest Service took over management in 1954. The LBJ is one of 20 National Grasslands administered by the US Forest Service. |

Does anyone have a recent map of Big Lake to get an idea of roads that can be driven/walked? All of the maps on TPWD are missing those details based on what I can view

Good but definitely focused on the beginner. Lots of first time hunters which is nice to see. I wish they had something like that when I started 6 years ago. Got to finally meet Froggy and some other great folks so was definitely worth my time.

Question for y'all homegrown Texans. Do the fu***ng spiders die when it gets colder? I'm pretty sure one tried to eat my spider stick.

Yeah, usually by now the temps cool down and the high during the week averages around 85, its still 95+.....absolutely dreadful summer heat wise, but usually they disappear from my experience once it really cools down around 50ish in the morning....

Good to know! I scouted a couple units today that looked promising, but there is no way in hell I'm walking through that at 5am lol. I'll stick with my less spider infested unit for the first few weeks.
