Upright for organization. I have a frigidaire form Lowes. It was around $5-600
I would like a chest freezer for just ice and storing dear heads or other animals waiting to go to the taxi.
I would get a upright if your wanting keep up with what meat you have.

Bought a new frost free upright last week on sale at Home Depot for under $500. The old one has been around for 20 plus years and finally stopped holding temp. I went with the upright for all the reasons listed above, primarily organization and space. Don't like digging around in a chest type.

I have a chest and two large uprights. If you want organization and ability to quickly grab what you're looking for go upright. I've had my two GE uprights for 10-15 years and have never had a single thing fall out when opening like others have mentioned. As long as you're organized and pay attention to how you stack packages, you will not have that issue.
My chest is primarily used to store ice.

Matter of preference, but I like my chest freezer. It is true that things get "lost" or forgotten in the bottom, but that is my own fault. One thing to consider though for meat storage in a "frost -free". The internal temperatures can fluctuate quite a bit when it goes through the defrost cycle (maybe some appliance specialists can explain better). But this is not good for frozen meat. When you open a chest type, all of the cold dense heavy air doesn't "pour " out like an upright. I have forgotten my chest type open overnight and the items on top were still frozen.
Anyway, organization is the main issue. If you use frequently like the convenience, the upright does have a chest type beat.

I like having one of each personally. The chest for storage of capes and bulk ice. The upright for organized storage of meat.
The one advantage to the chest is should your freezer fail, the chest will hold the cold air in much better and provide you a little more time to fix the issue before meat spoilage becomes a problem.
