We are hunting just out of Mason and I've never heard of a cactus buck until this year. We have 8 or 10 on camera. They never lose there horns and they are always in velvet, and they have no testicle.
I have one that would be 7 this year if he's still alive. I haven't seen him on camera since the spring so who knows.
He's less than 13 inches having his antlers that he put on as a two year old so he's never been hunted. He's also still has the body and frame of a two year old.
Would love to see him this year but not holding my breath.
We killed a few of them on a lease I had in Llano. Most of them had small ugly frames, but 1 year I killed a very nice 8 point with a perfectly symetrical frame. Could not believe he was still in full velvet at Christmas time. Rolled him over to start gutting him, and yep, no testicles. Scored 125
Like previously said, most have really big bases and are fairly narrow. We have a few on one of our properties and a lot more on another. Every once in awhile they can get really big.
I shot one like that last year in San Saba. We'd seen him off an on for a couple years, always in velvet. Turns out he had no testicles either. I believe he was at least 5 1/2 y.o.
