Default Live Hunt: Nilgai

Iím hunting 18,500 acres outside of Encino. We got to the ranch late last night and started hunting this morning.

Everything is on the table. Javelina, Turkey, Nilgai and Varmints.

This morning we hunted from the top drive and I shot a cow in the first 45 min. My buddy shot his cow over a waterhole about 5 min. after I shot mine.

We spotted a rattlesnake crossing the road. We lopped his head off. It still freaks me out that their body moves 2 hours after theyíve been killed.

Tonight Iím sitting over a fence crossing where they have a few bulls on camera over the past few days.

No bulls yet but Iíve had the same snake cross the road in front of me twice, light colored body, about 5ft long. Not a rattlesnake. Also had a turkey walk up behind the Bush Iím sitting in and scare the crap out of both of us.

Itís about 90 with a 18-20mph wind from the SW.

This is the 3rd time this snake has crossed in front of me. Heís about 40 yards away. Any idea what kind of snake?

I know pic quality isnít the best. I had to zoom in quite a bit.

The Santa Fe.

Snake is a coachwhip. Iíve seen him 4 more times. Heís a busy son-of-a-gun.

Iíve got some turkey down the road about 150 yards. Pretty sure the .375 is a tad too much for one.

Had a group of 4 javi cross the rd about 75 yards. Shot at the last one and missed. Theyíre quick! Just as I shot I heard 4 shots not too far away, hopefully someone else got a bull.

Drilled a few wells in their for Exxon. Didn't see a ton of Nilgai on there at that time. Only one I saw was a big bull coming out of the ranch in the back of a truck. But that was about 15 years ago.

No nilgai on the ground tonight. 1 javelina and another rattler. My buddy shot at a group of hogs, missed with all 4 shots.

A family friend is on a corporate lease and invited a few guys down every April. I wasnít able to make it last year. Weíll hunt tomorrow and part of Sunday before heading back.

Far from ideal conditions. I lucked out on mine and had him on the ground by 8:00 AM. Nobody else in our group got one till late in the afternoon. They just won't move in those conditions. Good luck.

Exactly. Yesterday afternoon was tough. Weíre hoping with it cooling down this evening thatíll get the bulls moving.

We have 3 cows down in about 24 hours but no bulls, yet.
