Flat out saying does not support 'assault type' firearms in the hands of civilians is not straddling a fence.
Its standing over it flipping the bird while saying "just my opinion"...

So here is Merriam Webster's definition of an "assault rifle". Wondering when they added the second definition. The first definition is based off tangibles in bold below and then the second definition appears to be some sort of emotional statement that is completely intangible.

Definition of assault rifle



: any of various intermediate-range, magazine-fed military rifles (such as the AK-47) that can be set for automatic or semiautomatic fire; also : a rifle that resembles a military assault rifle but is designed to allow only semiautomatic fire
