Best scope for $600 or less

What is the best scope on the market for $600 or less? Looking into the 14 or slightly higher power range. I have always been partial to Leupold, and considering the VX-3i, but not sure if there is something else to consider. This would be for a hunting rifle shooting 400 yds and closer. Also, should I go 50 or 40 mm?

Nikon Black X-1000. I have one and love it. For 400 and in it might be a little over kill, but mine tracks well and is very clear

              This, and 50mm vs 40.

I like Leupolds vx2 and VX-3i. I have one of each and they blow similarly priced scopes away in optical clarity. I also have a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 and it’s good for the price.

                      Leupold every time.

All I have on all my rifles are 40mm scopes. Will a 50mm scope require higher mounts? This is my wife's rifle, and I don't want her to have to have a higher cheek riser just to get a full field of view.

Just checked out a new manufacturer called German Precision Optics. I was really impressed with the clarity for the cost.

Depends on the rifle. My 50mm Vortex uses medium rings but it’s on a TC. I tried to put a 50mm leupold on a Remington 700 and medium rings didn’t work.

Athlon is tough to beat in that price range IMHO.
