Default On Call Compensation

Iím on call one week out of every six. We get no compensation unless actually called out. For yíall that are on call, how often and are you compensated in any way? Itís on my mind because my family is off having Christmas and Iím stuck at home waiting on the phone to ring.

I work on call a ton. I get my normal day rate for each day Iím on call. I only get one guaranteed day off a week though so while itís great sitting around the house and getting paid for it, Iím always glued to my phone.

We get 10 hours Comptime each week weíre on call and any extra if you get called in. During holidays you get the shaft because you didnít hit 40hrs so no time and a half until then, no extra compensation for us during holidays.

It’s the same for my guys. No compensation unless they get called out. We are oilfield so it’s 24 hr operations for us. Luckily we know when our jobs are going so we get very few surprise calls.

When I worked for an electrical contractor doing oilfield work, we were given $500/week for being on call. That was great, and you didnít mind being on call. The large pipeline company I work for now gives you nothing. Like mentioned, I have spend several holidays and many weekends at home waiting on the phone to ring with no compensation. I feel like they should give you something to have you on a leash.

I go on call once a month and I get $120 on call pay each time. I average 15-20 hours of OT the week I'm on call.

A few years ago I was on call Christmas and got called out at 1am Christmas morning I made it back home just as my kids were waking up to open presents.

We don't get paid unless we get called out, and we're on call every time we're away from the plant. But call outs are rare, only an emergency. It's 4 hours OT to show up for a call out.

I'm on call 2 weeks out of the month. One week I am secondary the following week I am the primary call out.

I only get paid if I get called out at OT rate. I can NOT go out of town, consume alcoholic beverages etc. The joys of police work.

I'm the Manager and I'm on call 24/7. Neither myself or my Team get any financial comp when on call.

I do try and take care of folks and track who's on call from Holiday to Holiday to ensure they don't get on-call the same time next year.

And if someone does have to put in extra hours for being called, I try take care of them later with a 3 day weekend here or there. Wish I could pay them extra, but its not my company.

Why do you have to stay home and not go w the family? If they are traveling out of the area that lets you make your response time, I understand. But if not, you should be able to go with them? I spent 37 years on call, recently retired...I am enjoying not having to worry about the phone ringing

I’m on call right now and we don’t get anything unless we’re called out. That’s rarely an issue because we usually get all we can handle. I went on call at 7:30 yesterday morning and I’ve already worked 25hrs.

On call every other weekend. Have 30 minutes to return call/page and 1 hour to get to the Cancer Center. Call pay is $25 per day $50 per holiday day to be on call and minimum 3 hours at time and a half equivalent (I am salary) for being called in.

This is the exact reason I passed a job in supervision a couple years ago. I was the interim supervisor. The company would not let operations call the technicians directly, so all calls came through me. We were very busy, and short handed. I couldn't see going on salary, losing money, and being tied down even more.

When I worked in oil field in the 70's and 80's and was on call 24/7 it was considered part of the job and included in the pay. No compensation for on call or being called in. On call compensation is good for what you guys are describing above.

We get $23 a day for being on call, then time and a half for anytime you actually respond. As the supervisor I’m always on call and only get compensated if something happens that I have to respond to. I take phone calls all hours of he day and night, but they give me a cell phone allowance, so I guess technically I’m compensated for that.

Did 30 years like that. Last ten I didn't even get paid when I got called out. Exempt employee they called it. But it was a good job and worth every effort. A lot of folks unemployed and under employed this Christmas. Thank God you have a good job and keep your nose to the grind stone.

I didn't even think of the fact that as the coordinator for my department all of the communication goes through me

I answer my phone 24/7 if I think it has something to do with work, no pay for that but I figure it is part of the job

I work in the oilfield. On call 10-15 days a month. No compensation for being on call and no OT pay if I gotta go out. We get no OT anytime anymore.

On the plus side, I rarely work 40 hrs a week but get paid for 40. Itís a trade off.

I am on call one week per month. I am a salary employee, so no compensation whether I am called out or not. I do get mileage.

The hourly guys get garenteed time no matter if they work it or not.

As a supervisor I was on call 7/24 When called out no additional compensation either. Working additional days for ta and still no additional compensation. Retired after 36 years and not one management came to my retirement farewell so just look out for yourself because there are very few companies that take care of their employees like companies use to. Save all you can and retire as soon as you can.

You should. 85 is the norm per hour here. Anything after 500 pm is 130 per hour. So you or your boss are making some dinero.

Wow. Been in the industry 30+ years and never heard of a tech not getting compensated for their call week or not getting OT when called out.
I'm in the commercial & industrial side of the industry, so maybe that has something to do with it.
