The Biggest Gaggle of Spotted Beasts Yet

I opted to cruise out beyond Hunt....along the North Fork of the Guadalupe yesterday evening. Pretty much a routine of mine after work, keeps me out of trouble.

The herd was way large and I couldn't cover it all with the 300mm. So I aimed at the big guy and let the 50 fly.

I guess there must of been roughly 100+ Axis in this herd. They work out of thick cedar up tight against the hills and move out to graze in the horse/cattle pastures near the road. It's all low fence here and the Axis have literally taken over this one particular valley. I've watched them for roughly 3 years now, each year the herd grows larger.

Cool stuff, Rob! You should've shot 2 or 3 shots across the whole herd so you could stitch a pano. (Easy to think of when you're not staring at them eyeball to eyeball.)

I wouldn't mind having those odds.

                              Thanks!!!

The Axis doe are eyeing another huge axis herd just to the left of this pic. I managed to work low along the ditch and nestled up hard against a huge fence post (3 way corner). I had my head and lens over the top of the post with my lens resting on top of the post. My body was partially hidden by a string of fence posts that worked down toward them (left of this shot). They spotted me anyway and started working away from me back into the brush just moments after I started shooting.

I have the toughest time shooting axis pics. Blackbuck are tough as well.

Here's another shot....buck showing the right side.
