My Arctic Cat 500 was spitting, sputtering, and backfiring like that. Cleaned out carb twice, and rebuilt on the third time, thinking I just had a bad jet/ needle. Still acted same after rebuild. Checked battery voltage when off and it was at 11 something. Checked voltage at idle and was almost 15, too much voltage. It idled sludgy with headlights off. When I turned on headlights, the idle cleaned up somewhat, but sputtered still when on the throttle. What that did was draw some current away from battery, bringing it closer to the regulated voltage it needed to run. So, I made my way to the voltage regulator, unplugged it at idle, and it purred like a kitten. I had full, immediate throttle response with regulator unplugged. Bought a new voltage regulator and it runs like a champ now. It sounded like carb issues from the beginning. I was wrong.
