    I need a toolbox!

Well, I've been looking at the Montezuma brand triangle toolboxes, and really like them. We've had one for about 10 years on the farm, and it's a tank. My only problem is I don't really like spending 4-500 dollars on one!
So, I've decided to attempt building one.
I have access to a water jet, so will use it for all steel cutting. Im still in the planning stages, but hopefully this summer can get it nearly done. I'll get pictures posted up of current plans. I'm always looking for recommendations!

This is the style I'm going for, just in case you haven't seen one before.

    Here is my general drawing.

Here with the lid open. Thst large flat space will have socket holders on it, either magnetic or riveted. Depends on magnetic strength. There is room for 39 screwdrivers/Ratchets/ extensions in the wholes. (sizes will probably be adjusted)

And here with the socket lid lifted up. Space for hammers, etc back there.

The small flat space up front will tentatively be a compartment for bolts, nuts, etc.
    Wrenchs hang in the back.

Latest rendition has some major changes.

Added wrench hangers, with both facing forward.

Modeled it off Montezuma s 36 inch box, and moved the screwdrivers over to the side.

Here is a head on shot of the screwdrivers.
Still need to add in the socket tray.

That's awesome! Pretty cool to make it exactly how you want it.

Rough idea of what socket hangers will look like. Probably need to fiddle with dimensions some yet.

And the tentative final numbers are in.
              184 socket pegs
              37 wrench hangers
              24 screwdriver holes
              24 Ratchet /extension holes.

I think this ought to hold everything I've got and plenty more!

The majority of the steel will be 14 guage. Hangers and pegs are 3/16"
Pneumatic shocks will hold the door open, and the socket tray up.

Still looking for any changes to make, so if you see anything fire away!

Those boxes are the best. Looking forward to the weld up

Anybody have any tips on latches? I'm going to use a pnuematic shock to hold the lid open, just need to figure out how to latch it. Montezuma will sell the replacement latch. But it doesn't have the rods needed to work.
I'm planning on getting a continuous style hinge for the lid, and may use that for the inner socket tray also.

Had a slight hiccup... I want able to get the whole thing cut on the water jet. I'm going to try and get the tracks cut on it, and just use a plasma cutter on all the straight stuff. Hopefully that works out.

Dang im jealous. Been wanting one of these for a long time. I really like the John deere ones. They are built by montezuma i think but have a few more options that i like that I feel are worth the money. Just have a hard time spending 6-700 like you..

                        One of these days.

I feel ya! Hopefully start cutting some steel in a week or so. Finals are taking up most of my time now.

I carry a 36" in my truck everyday. You can't ask for a better truck box to work out of. Everything has its place and stays there even down the rock lease roads

Update: dropped the files off to get cut today. They were about 24 in2 short of having enough steel... Whoops! Should have it in hand in the next week or so, and maybe get it welded together next weekend... Well see!
