Cool

Just walk on past. I was down there 15-16 Feb all by myself. Alot of fishermen but no hog huntings. My longbow remainded silent. Hope to make another trip before in greens up too much. Good luck at GRXH fellas. PC has been getting alot of pressuererI'd go across the creek or up creek and that might work out better. Stay in the open woods and out of the bloodweed.

It's more effective and quieter when you are by yourself.... Until the entire pack of hogs gets after you in the dark!

I've figured out how to solve that problem, lets just say there are a few less dogs chasing hogs and deer around out there.

Thumbs down

I hunted Pecan Grove from 4:30 PM until 6:59 on Monday. Wind at the parking area was out of the east, but switched to out of the south over the next hour. Stalked and glassed (mostly silently) along the power line easement 50 yards west of checkpoint VI until sundown, then set up overwatching a game trail along the engineered channel, northeast of checkpoint VI. The trail came out of a thicket and headed north, down to the water. Stayed there until the end of legal hours.

Nothing seen or heard.

Ok I need some help. I ahve been out there a couple times now with out any luck. The closest I ahve come to anything is finding a decent wallow a couple weeks ago and all the dead hogs in the pecan grove. I was out this morning in the area of gate 6, checkpoint IV and V. tried sitting, tried stalking. Snuck up on some cows, suprised a orange cat and got close enough to soem squirrels to hit em with a rock. but no hogs. I would love to be able to go out there with someone who knows the area. Leave me a message if you can assist.

Default Thinking of going this weekend

Hello all,

This is my first post, and I am a longtime whitetail/gun hunter who is ready to try something new.
I have never hunted public land before, but I have a permit and Granger is closest to home (Copperas Cove, about 1 1/2 hrs) so I'm thinking about going out there Friday night and camping out, then hunting Saturday.
Just wondering if there's a decent spot out there where a rookie can see a little action without getting in the way of the seasoned hog hunters.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, went out this evening to san gabriel gate 6. Walked around until about 7. Saw lots of cows, came across a couple huge areas that had been torn to heck. pretty cool stuff. decided to drive by the dam for the heck of it. Parked at the over look and walked down below the ****. Came across a small boar piglet rooting around by himself. MY FIRST PIG sighted at granger! He was in the middle of the meadow. High scooted to about 35 yards before he noticed me. Took the shot and missed low. Boy he ran fast. I parralled him for about 100 yds then decided he had put forth a lot of effort. good run. next time I will go to the pecan grove first.

Yeah mels soldier. I always stop and have a look through binoculars from the overlook whenever I have to drive over the dam. Have seen hogs twice from that location, and once glassing from the area above the spillway at the Pecan Grove parking area. I have seen them NE of checkpoint II, and vic of checkpoint X on the Pecan Grove map. Chances of seeing a hog moving in daylight are much better on overcast days like yesterday. Today would have been great if you had the gear to stay warm and dry.

And yes, them hogs at Granger put on their Nikes once they spot you!

i've got the gear and was planning on heading out this afternoon, but kids school stuff prevents me from going. I am off tomorrow so I may go out before I have to catch my flight.Probably hit pecan grove for a couple hours after sunrise if you are interested. I have a flight out of Killeen at 4, so it will have to be a short day. But it only takes one shot.......

Went last night and scared up a bunch of hog. Mostly little ones. I shoot at two of them and missed. Both were running flat out and I really had no chance of getting them, but I let er fly anyways. I found three arrows and a skunk. Dang thing would not get out of the alley I was walking down. So I had to get into the brush and walk through, then about 5 or so hogs jumped up and ran. They were about 30 yards in font of where I wanted to go. Cursed little skunk. Man Stalking is tough. Those hogs know when you are coming. We tried pushing them to each other. But they were speedy to say the least. It was neat. The Sumac was so high. I couldn't even tell where they were bedded down half the time. i can't wait untill next weekend.
