Still very green out, so feeder activity is slower than normal.

We had several new bucks show up in the past few weeks along with the regulars, but none that are on the list for this season. Quatro has gone missing since the big rain at the beginning of the month, but im staying hopeful that he makes a mistake during the rut. Notice that the larger buck in the first picture also has the same split brow as the shed I found last year, as well as the split brow Cuatro has.

I was hoping to plow this weekend, but as always something had to go wrong. Im hoping to get my hydraulics working again on the tractor tomorrow, and hopefully I will be able to plow before this weekend is over.

Good luck to all the dove hunters this weekend!

I spoke with TPWD biologist Mike Miller last night at a seminar and he will be coming out next spring to see what i am doing, give me recommendations, and help us restart our wildlife management area.

In the meantime, just a few weeks left until we get to fling arrows!

I think the buck on the left is "cuatro", the double split brow buck I posted earlier. I am not positive but the small 8 is the buck he always runs with. Good to see him on camera after about 2 months of no pictures.

Otherwise, nothing I am too thrilled about.

I was in the middle of my trail cam survey when one camera decided to quit working, so I only got data from 1 camera. This means the survey, in theory, should approximate my deer herds per about 100 acres. The camera that did work ran over 10 days in the south central side of the property. Here are my results with the attached computation form from QDMA that I used. Remember, these are all just an estimation.

Concern: My fawn numbers are horrible this year

Sippy good to see the rain for sure we got about 3 in. at our place new Grosvenor. The survey was interesting for sure, I'm familiar with area that you hunt sort of . About eight years ago I help work on a house in that area . The place was on the Pecan Bayou on the way to work in the mornings I would see a few deer along the way but once I got close to the Bayou the number went up.

Looking good, I think we got quite a bit of rain in SA too.

What's your feeder/trailcam activity like? Have they been showing up in daylight hours or mostly nighttime? More active mornings or evenings? Hitting the feed?

Just curious, thinking about heading down this weekend if it's not too hot.

They have been slower than normal at the feeders, but most of the activity is still in the daytime. I dont know what the rain last week has done vegetation wise however.

There were some acorns starting to fall.

Bucks are still shy, but they should make an appearance around the beginning of rifle season.

Doe are plentiful, and Tiffany and I are looking to start on our doe harvest this weekend. Good luck to everyone!

Haven't seen any updates on this thread in awhile, still hard at it??

Got a question for you regarding protein. Finally set up my two 1000lb feeders in Santa Anna, what should I fill them with?? I went ahead and put 4 or 5 sacks of 16% I found at the feedstore in SA mixed with 6 or 7 sacks of corn, in an attempt to get them acclimated to the feed. What do you use in your feeders and where can I find it cheapest?

I just read through some of the thread, looks like your on red chain 17%. I'll have to check and see if there is any on my route to SA.

Noticed your degree was wildlife, so I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. I've been told that any pellet over 16% protein doesn't make a difference, or just gets pooped out, or not utilized by the deer. Some others have said the max is more like 20%, but I also noticed the price was the same whether the protein was 16 or 22 percent. Any advantages to feeding the higher % stuff, or could it even be bad for their health to be getting that much protein pumped into them? Or will they not consume as much?

Anyhow, my goal in feeding isn't antler growth, it's just to keep and hold them around my property. Obviously I'd like to go the cheapest route, but I'd like them to have at least some nutrition, otherwise, I'd just fill em with corn. I read on another thread that if you were to feed them a lower protein livestock pellet, they'll just go through that much more, to get what they need out of it, offsetting any money savings.

I'd like to hear your thoughts.

This is Sippy, Tiffany left herself logged in.

Yes sir, I am currently using 17% red chain at about $9.50/50#.

A 16% protein is all you need. In fact the nutritionist at Red Chain told me he does not understand why some feed solely 20%, and said he actually is somewhat concerned about a 20% as their sole feed source.

I would stick to a protein pellet formulated specifically for cervids.
