I had one when I first starting bow hunting in the mid-90's. They were fairly accurate at bow hunting ranges, but they did not work very well in low light. I think laser rangefinders came out just a few years later but it was quite a while before I bought one - I remember the early laser models being quite expensive.

Expensive and big is what I remember.
Our first one was the size of some 10x50 binos.

I had one of those dial doohickeys- no idea where it crawled off to.

Like this? I found this pic on the internet - Bushnell 400 rangefinder. In 1998 it cost $300 (about $460 in 2018 dollars) I sure did not have that kind of money to spend on one 20 years ago.

Still have my Bushnell 400 and it works like a champ. Just recently bought one of the smaller footprint Primos models and love how much more compact it is.

I have one I bought used 8 or 9 years ago. Put a battery in it around Christmas and it works fine. Just big and bulky.

Yes that looks about like it.
My father got what I remembered to be a Simmons pair as a gift from somewhere maybe an anniversary gift from work but it was similar to the one you posted big bulky but accurate.

Still have one, used it last year to range the feeder in my profile. Worked great when dialing in agains feeder legs.

This is the one I have and still use. IDK how old it is.

Edit. I guess it was made in 1999. Only have to change batteries.
