My 15 YOA Nephew wants a 7mm Mag for his first rifle

So like the title says, my 15 year old nephew wants a 7mm Mag for his first rifle. He says he's done the research. He won't be going to Alaska or Canada any time soon.

I think a better option for a first rifle is something in the 7mm-08, .243, .308, or 6mm arena.

    What do y'all think??

I know a 10 year old that would shoot my 7mm mag in a heartbeat.

Is he the one paying for it? I know how I am and once I get set on something if I end up compromising I'll usually be disappointed down the road and sell at a loss to get what I originally wanted.

Well if he is set on a 7mag I have a great first gun for him. Late 90's Rem 700 7mag and probably less than 200 rounds. Will make him a smoking deal.

I was shooting a .30-06 and a .303 at that age with no recoil pad.

I would lean toward a .308 if it was me.

Get him something heavy is my only advice will help with the recoil.

            Let him shoot one first

Sounds like it might be hard talking him out of it. Has he shot one before? I love my 7mm-08..but if he insists on a 7 mag, I’d suggest putting a muzzle break on it. It will kick like a .243.

Yeah a lot of people don’t like breaks. And it’s true: if you do not wear hearing protection, you will ruin your ears with a muzzle brake. But you will also ruin your ears without hearing protection and no break.

If you can borrow one and take him to the range and have him shoot a half a box of shells through it. If he shoots it accurately and he still wants one it is exactly what he needs!

My son head shoots hogs at 200+ yards with my sako 7mag and he is 15.

Tell him to get after it! It's his gun, his choice.

You can't talk a 15 yo boy out of anything anyway.

                            This

And it is a better “only rifle” option than the others you mentioned.

Get him some 140 ammo and recoil should be no issue even without a brake

I have a 7mm Remington mag that brings blood on both ends. To each his own.
