Make a sign and stand in front of the camera saying "I have a very particular set of skills, skills that make me a nightmare to people like you." Or dress up in a clown outfit and do silly stuff. Shouldn't take long to find out who it is.

Makes you wonder if the trap "came with the place" when he bought it. Somebody had probably been trapping on the place before he bought it I would guess and the previous owner did not tell him the trapper or your friend who bought the place..

What brand of trap? That will give you some insight as different brands are different trigger mechanisms.
Jager pro brand is controlled by the camera. Other brands communicate directly with a relay on the gate.

I'm assuming the trap is set off via text, if so you should have the number of who's been triggering it. Text them and see what's up. I bet it's the guy who built the trap (not original land owner) and he doesn't know the place was sold.

My bet is that someone else was saying the same thing when they found your buddy’s card in that camera. Probably didn’t realize it had changed hands
