Default How long is whiskey good?

My wifeís grandpa gave me an old bottle of whiskey today. Seagramís V.O. six-year bottled in 1987. It has been opened, no clue when, and it looks like just a shotís worth is missing. Smells fine. Think itís still good?

I'm sure it's gone bad. Send it to me and ill.get rid of it for you...it would probably give you a bad head ache if you drank it.

Take a sip, if it’s bad you’ll know right away. I tried some rare Scotch that had been opened for decades one time. It had a slight turpentine taste to it but I’m still alive.

I just realized I have a bottle of VO that is probably 28+ years old. I bought it back in my bartending days, didn't really like it and it has been at my various house bars since the late 80s. I bet it still tastes like crap.

Exactly. Unless its sitting in a barrel it should taste the same today as it did in 1987. I think the only thing you have to worry about is evaporation.

I can't answer if it's safe to drink because I never had an opened bottle last more than a year. Whiskey doesn't age in the bottle like wine. So a 6 year whiskey that is 33 years old is still a 6 year whiskey. It may go bad but it doesn't age unless you add wood or put in a cask.

It's inversely proportional to ratio of the size of the bottle to the glass

From my limited research, it is the cork that can ruin the whiskey or wine. All depends on how it was stored for those years.
