Need help with some buck ham steaks...

This past weekend I went to my deer lease and took a pack of ham steaks from the buck I shot opening weekend. I didn't have time to marinate it so I just threw some fajita seasoning on them and dropped them on the grill. Well, they smelled like the doe we had just quartered and it didn't taste much better.

So my question is...is this normal? Would marinating have solved the problem? Anything I can do if marinating won't solve the problem? It sure tasted nasty.
