Default Tax return question - Is it fair?

Here's a topic that I am curious to know how you feel about it...

I have someone in my family, not immediate, that is receiving a rather large tax refund. She is low income and has three kids. She claims she is receiving over DOUBLE what she even paid into taxes to begin with! Is this even possible? If so, I think it's BS that someone can receive a larger tax refund then they even paid in total. Opinions?

I've got a couple in my family as well as co-workers with family members that are this exact way. It's not really fair in my eyes. They parade around and tell everyone what they got back. Then, proceed to go out and blow it all at bars, on drugs, and crap like mini motorcycles that they don't need. It's a sad deal. Something needs to be done about things like this instead of all efforts trying to ban certain types of firearms and magazines, IMO.

if anyone is enrolled into welfare or lonestar their returns should be forfeited to the govt, and that should be either husband or wife so one cant claim the welfare and one claim income taxes

Atleast have a law to limit that their refund can be more then they even paid.

disclaimer* - There may already be this law, and she was full of crap. I am ignorant to tax laws.

I don't think there is. There sure needs to be though. I recall one of my co-workers sons getting back 4k last year while only paying in 1500 or something like that.

Yep, it happens. My neighbors SIL works it out to get this every year. I believe it is due to the earned income tax credit.
It burns me up also, is a bunch of bull.

I guess theoretically it is possible with the child tax credits. When I was in high school working part time my income fell below the "poverty level" and I received all my paid taxes back but I never got more than I paid. I can see a similar situation where someone falls below the poverty line in income but received additional deductions for children. Not saying it is right, just saying I believe it is possible.

Edit: What rjet said! I didn't know the name of it.

Why isn't it fair? Our gubment gives away money they don't have every day!

I don't see how anyone can think it's right to get back more than you paid in.
I know there are some kinks that need to be worked out, but I really wish we'd go to a flat tax or a consumption tax ... everyone pays their share that way.

Its the child income credit or whatever its called. Its how the illegals file saying they didnt pay taxes on $150 of lawn mowing money but they support 20 illegal children and they get refunds of $20-30k. Course the IRS wants nobody to speak of this or mention it to them, and they wanna question every expense I claim on my taxes.

Some info about the EIC:

Quote:
Enacted in 1975, the initially modest EIC has been expanded by tax legislation on a number of occasions, including the widely-publicized Reagan Tax Reform Act of 1986, and was further expanded in 1990, 1993, and 2001, regardless of whether the act in general raised taxes (1990, 1993), lowered taxes (2001), or eliminated other deductions and credits (1986).
In the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the EITC was temporarily expanded for two specific groups: those families with three or more children and married couples; this expansion was extended through December 2012 by H.R. 4853, the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010. Effective for the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 filing seasons, the EITC will support these taxpayers by:
  • Increasing benefits for larger families by creating a new category or “third tier” of the EITC for families with three or more children. In this tier, the credit phases in at 45 percent of income (up from 40 percent), effectively increasing the maximum credit for these families by almost $600.
  • Increasing marriage penalty relief by raising the income threshold at which the EITC begins to phase out for married couples to $5,000 above the amount for unmarried filers, thereby giving MFJ filers a longer plateau. The phase-out for married filing jointly is still not double that for single filers, and thus there still is a marriage penalty, although less than there used to be.
Today, the EITC is one of the largest anti-poverty tools in the United States

Not sure anymore, it use to be under 10K you paid nothing. I asked tha tax man last year how come I'm not greeting back what I use to? He said well you make too much money. Well bull #%^* I've never heard of anybody making too much money. Ask any millionaire if they would like more money, I doubt any would turn it down. But I don't get if you are not responsible and have a bunch of kids you can't afford, you get paid!!!!!!!

Still love this country but we do have issues.

Nothing new. Been going on for a while now. Yup, they will blow it in one day with new flat screen tv, iPhone, iPad, laptop or whatever. I guess maybe the guberment think its good because they put it back into the economy and stimulate it. But that's my thinking. They should instead to save it and have an emergency funds backed up so they don't have to rely on welfare system. Oh well. We voted those peeps in the office, this is what we get in return, the shaft that is.

What if people on TBH intend to use this credit and buy a bow with it? And do you honestly think that if someone told you to check this box and double your return, you wouldn't do it?

The EIC is not a new thing. It has been around for a very long time. And people of all colors, race, ethnicity, religion and financial standing have been using and abusing it for years and years.

If you are not getting it maybe you need a better tax person.

And if getting a large tax return is such a bad thing, why is no one complaining about the television commercials where they vow to get you the largest return possible?

Not to sound like a total jerk, but losing one income would eliminate the need for day care and might even throw you in a tax bracket where your credit could change to a higher value.

It's taxpayer fraud, not a "loophole". And everyone who practices it should be prosecuted (better yet, STOPPED with better oversight).
Here is Forbes' take on the video: (click "Continue to site", then read both pages)
http://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyphi...igger-problem/

I related a story recently about how some cousins of mine convinced an elderly, befuddled parent (very well off - oil profits) to give them his money for the purpose of getting him on to Medicaid so that the govt would have to pay for his nursing home/long term care. God forbid the man use his own money to decrease their eventual inheritance.

Burnadell saw that post and pointed out that they had, in fact, committed fraud.

Another bunch on that same side of the family refused to buy health insurance and somehow hid their assets from the County hospital (John Peter Smith in Ft. Worth) when one of them suffered a catastrophic injury at home. They, too, were quite well off. I don't know how they did it, but they got "free" or "freeish" health care to the tune of several hundred thousands of dollars.

The point is, certainly illegal immigrants should be STOPPED doing this. And so should everyone else.

Funny how we all know these points but still we can't do anything about it. I am not married, have no kids, and rent. I don't even know what a tax return is.

What ****** me off is that I have type 1 diabetes and could use a little help,300 dollars a month just to stay alive. plus the ins i pay at work, but since I am white and don't have 15 kids. I have to suffer. I work 50 hrs a week, take care of my elderly mother and 100 acre ranch.

Why can't any one see that there is a new minority and it's the white blue collar worker.

We use the EIC and every other deduction we can find, just to keep from having to pay more taxes than we already are. I'm not sure why they just can't go to federal sales tax, it seems to work pretty well in Texas. Then everytime I see a guy using welfare benifits who is wearing shoes that I couldn't afford or driving a car with rims and tires that cost more than I make in a month, at least I would know he paid some federal tax when he bought it. I know these programs benefit a lot of people who need help, but there are a lot of people who abuse them as well.

Oh another thing, there's thing that has been going on for a while. Someone would claim someone else's kids to try to get maximum refund then give it to kids mom. This also has been going on for a while now. I know its fraud but its been going on. This is reason why I don't associate myself with these Deaf people. They brag about it on FB!

I dont think people are mad that tax paying citizens are taking advantage of tax credits. Its the illegals are who claiming children who dont even live in this country on there taxes. that is not our job to support another country.
