    Kinney County Opening Weekend Recap

My good friend and two sons flew in from Boston this past Saturday. The plan was to hunt until Tuesday morning then fly back. We have several bucks on the list. I was hunting with Wyatt, and Gage would be sitting with Dennis who was after a buck that we passed on last year as a 155ish class buck. First morning was uneventful, but that evening a buck we called Pretty 10 showed up where Wyatt and I were hunting. We have watched Pretty 10 since 2011 and this would be it for him. Wyatt made a perfect shot with his crossbow and Pretty 10 went about 40 yards. He taped out at 150 and some change.

The next morning was also uneventful, but that evening I got the text from Dennis. The buck we call "Main Frame" was down. He had 15 points and scored 166 2/8.

Monday evening Dennis hunted with Gage. Gage took out a cull we called Melted Brows. He made a great shot and the buck piled up less than 40 yards away.

The boys ended up both tagging out on the last hunt on Tuesday morning. Wyatt killed a cull 7pt (no pics) and Gage ended up taking out an old 10pt we called Roman II.

Dennis and the boys left out after the Tuesday morning hunt. After capping out the deer and cleaning up, it was my turn. I decided to sit out for an old 8pt that is mostly nocturnal. We tried to kill him last year but he wouldn't cooperate. At around 5:20 I couldn't hold off coughing. I ran every deer off. I thought that was it, but the deer started coming back out soon after. I looked to the north and the old 8 was coming up the road. I let him get into position and let the arrow fly. The arrow went in behind the shoulder but somehow deflected, clipping his spine. Fine with me. No dragging involved. He could 138 and change.
