Polypropylene liners, Wigwam wool socks over them. Trust me, I'm a Yankee and hate cold feet. I've spent entire winters with numb toes till I found what worked.
Oh and put on a pair of knee high panty hose before your socks if it is very cold- they also make moisture wicking socks that look like panty hose but they cost alot more. It makes all the difference in the world.
I second the sock liners. I've worn them with the Smartwool socks when elk hunting, not for cold but to wick moisture away from my feet and prevent blisters on my heels. They definitely work. Gel heel inserts are the 3d thing to make the long days hiking through the forests more fun.
