Tachycardia (PSVT). Anyone been treated for it?

Had an early morning visit to the ER this morning with what was diagnosed as Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT). My heartrate was 205 and would not slow down. They ended up rapid injecting something called Adenosine. It basically stops your heart for 2-3 seconds then restarts. It's like hitting a reset button. My heartrate went from 205 down to 85 in the matter of a few seconds. They kept me for a few hours for observation then released me because my heartrate was normal and blood pressure excellent. I have to meet with a cardiologist and they are talking about doing an ablation where they go in through an artery and "zap" the affected area of your heart either with radio waves or freeze it. It removes the area of your heart that is causing this short circuit. I don't like the sound of this, but it appears to be a common, safe, and very effective treatment.

Anyone ever had PSVT and any kind of treatment for it? He also suggested some medications (beta blockers, etc) but they have lower effectiveness and you have to take them forever.

I'm home now, a little tired but feel pretty much normal.

    205! Wow!

Didn't know the human heart could beat higher than about 160 for any time at all.

    That had to be scarey.

    Edit:
Just read it could beat up to 400 times per minute with that condition. Would have never thought it possible....

I would say its fairly common but I've only seen it a few times with patients. Alot of that depends on your age, health habits such as what you eat and your amount of exercise as well as family medical history. Its a well known condition that can be treated with medication sometimes but not always life long.

That adenosene gave you a pretty weird feeling I bet

No worries man. It's odviously been explained to you very well and you listened very well. The ablation procedure is pretty common and very safe. I've not had it done, but I know people who have and they're all still walking around like normal.

Ive never had it but Ive treated patients with it. Adenenosine is an amazing drug. As you said it actually STOPS your heart and restarts it. I wouldnt worry to much. We run across patients with it all the time that live with it just fine. Good luck on your recovery and I'm glad it all worked out.

Tripling it had nothing to do with it!

Now that fourth one might have...

I have a buddy who is a superb athlete that had that done and his is 110% good to go. It was absolutely necessary and so he gave the green light. I would find the best doc who has done this 1000 times and seriously consider this but he is doing fine.

Rudey some good advice is that if this happens again Call EMS. Most if not all Advance Life Support units are capable of resolving PSVT. I say this because PSVT can progress very rapidly to V-Fibb which = DEAD. If you are driving yourself to the hospital and this occurs it would not be good. Good luck with your procedure and be sure to listen to your DR.

i have had a few "runs" of svt over the last 8-10 years, when it comes on i usually hold my breath and "bear down" and it will go away, this and the vagal massage on the carotid artery are first responder treatment for svt.
mine are caused by too much caffiene, along with stress. so watch your caffiene, tobacco intake, the stress well lemme know how you get rid of that !!!!
