    Driving from Arlington to Destin

We are heading out Saturday to Destin. I have never driven thru Louisiana. The wife thinks we should go down to I10 and head east. I was thinking take 120 to Jackson. Looking for suggestions from those that have driven it.

    Thanks,

Id take 20 to jackson before i would drive down to I10, lots of unneeded driving going that way.

Take 20 to 49 in LA to drop down and hit 190 to Baton Rouge. 190 is terrible but it beats getting stuck on the Basin Bridge on 10.

49 is a nice big hwy and the only one in LA with a 75 mph speed limit.

I just did destin to Houston earlier in the summer and it was an easy trip. However it looks like 20 is faster for you. If you stop in Hattiesburg Ms be sure to eat at Ed's Burger Joint, We originally drove from NW Arkansas to Hattiesburg and stopping at ED's was a blast. They have a bocce courts, hula hoops, pool tables all outside where the kiddos can play and get some of their energy out after being in a car all day.

I live in DFW and we make the trip yearly we have gone both ways. We go 20 to vicksburg and start going SE. I10 always has construction. Another point when you come into Mobile try to avoid the tunnel on I10 There is another way around the water.
          Good luck

20 to Jackson then south to Mobile is first choice.
20 to Shreveport then south to Lafayette is second.

              Louisiana highways SUCK.
              SUCK SUCK SUCK
they are ALL under construction and they tear up 50 miles of road before they try to fix it.
Hope you got good tires and a comfy suspension and are not pulling a travel trailer.

btw.. doesnt matter which route you take.. they all suck... but i10 is the worst.

Jackson. by a long shot. You will still get hung up in mobile. We went south out of shreveport on the way down and it sucked, we went to jackson coming home

Thanks for the suggestions. I will push for 20 to Jackson to Hattiesburg. Probably stop for the night, checkin is not until Sunday.

Take 20 route to Jackson then south to Mobile. It's a 12 hr or so drive. Break it up. It's 6 hrs to Vicksberg, if you stop there your half way and go see the battleground, worth the visit. There is also a casino there if your into that. Most places won't let you check in until 2pm or after so leave at 8 the next morning should be there right on time nice and relaxed. Have friends that drive all night and they are usually pretty beat when they get there.

I take 20 to 49 to 10 to 12 above the big lake.

It takes time off the train because there are less options for the wife and kids to have to stop. Less lights and faster speed limits.

Agree that the roads are crappy, but I’m driving at 2am from Van on Sunday morning and that’s the route I’m taking

We just went a couple weeks ago from North of Dallas - Took 20 over to 49 and worked our way that way.

                        I wouldnt go the I-10 route ...

I've made the Houston to Destin drive many times and definitely would agree with most above to stay off I-10 until Miss if you are leaving from Dallas.

I-10 is constantly under construction in the LA stretch. Traffic can be bad in Baton Rouge and if there's any type of wreck around the basin, good luck.

Also, the Mobile tunnel can be a multi-hour delay.

Anyone making this drive from Houston, I would strongly advise you leave early in the morning (i.e. before 5:00 a.m.). You can get through Baton Rouge before traffic is too bad and the Mobile tunnel traffic isn't quite as bad as it is later in the day.

It's also a pain in the rear to get to Destin on a Saturday afternoon. We've also had significant delays getting across the toll bridge.

It's a pretty frustrating drive. Taken us upwards to 14 hours when it should have been less than 10.

I’d walk there before I take I-10 route again. Never again.

I am leaving out in the morning from the Austin area.. hopefully I-10 isn’t too bad.. not sure I have another route option.

Driving to Denham Springs tomorrow and will finish up the drive Saturday morning
