Angelfire for sure. It's family oriented, only about 11 hours from you. They'll take your kids skiing while mom and dad do their own thing or you can obviously stay with them too. Lodging isn't too expensive and the lift tickets were about $66 adult, kids 6 and under are free. I go there every year. I've done Breck, Wolf Creek, Red River and Taos. I like AF the best. Great mountain.

Anywhere you go on Spring Break is going to be crowded but Breck, Wolf Creek and Taos are crazy crowded on Spring Break. Angelfire is called the best kept secret in the southwest. Shhhhhh....

X3 on Winter Park. Best ski schools in CO. Big enough that spring break crowds won't be bad if everything is open.

We loved Brighton,Utah - kids 12 and under skiid free but I will NEVER ski spring Break again, too many snowboarding punks. We just took our kids out of school for a few days until they were in HS when that was no longer cool. Good luck.

Picking up skis on the drive in is cheaper than getting them at the mountain.

Also buying lift tickets and arranging lessons can be bought cheaper ahead of time.

Do not skip the lessons for any first timers.
Flying. Trying to arrange to get tickets and lessons now.

I really don't like the idea of going during Spring Break but working around basketball, baseball and school.

Ive been a number of times on Spring Break with the family. Winter Park was probably the best for what you are describing. Closely followed by Park City and Breckenridge. I was at Smuggler Notch last October but not for skiing obviously. Seemed like a nice place.

We've been skiing a few times during spring break.Heres the 4 we've gone to during spring breaks as a family. Wolf Creek is really nice and family friendly- just a bit of a daily drive, Squaw Valley is awesone and Buttermilk in Aspen Village were great.Breckenridge is just the epitome of a ski town in my estimation. Of the 4 during spring break Wolf Creek would be a solid win. The whole north lake Tahoe scene is wonderful and not too expensive. Aspen has great shopping and way too many Californians for my taste--- plus it runs a little more expensive. But Breck is extremely fun for the newer skiier. All things being equal I'd head to Breck without a doubt...

To answer your question, New Mexico is easily the least expensive if driving. Santa Fe, Angelfire and Apache are all good and very kid friendly.

Opinion on Tahoe. LOL @ Keegan. We don't need your opinion. That is one of the greatest places on earth. What part are you going to? I can give you some pointers.

My favorite resorts out west are as follows:

                        Breck
                        Kirkwood
                        Squaw
                        Sierra at Tahoe
                        Vail
                        Steamboat
                        Heavenly
                        Santa fe
                        Purgatory
                        Apache
                        Angel Fire

For apres ski/board Lake Tahoe is amazing. Casino's and Ultra Lounges. The area of South Lake Tahoe is extremely cool. Hevanly is not my favorite place to ride due to crowds, too many planker wankers and all the good blacks are bumped out from wanker traffic.

This is the place we rent our ski equipment from but they are only in Colorado.

The location on I-70 is cheaper than there locations at actual ski resorts.

You'll like it. It has everything...south lake or north shore? If you stay in southlake, ski kirkwood....best mountain up there and kind of off the beaten path so you don't get the traffic. Sierra has good spring skiing too, too many people though

Keystone is very kid friendly. Most of the mountain on the front is nice green runs and wide. A big mountain. Lots of trails. Quite a few mountains have narrow or limited green runs to the bottom so they get rough and skied out quick. The kids may like going all the way to the top with an easy way down as opposed to being stuck near the bottom.

Angel Fire is great for kids and beginners. Cheapest ski trip you can do, but about the minimum in services and mountain area that I would go to. For me, its a great 3 day (ski days) trip. For more days than that, I would go somewhere else. Also the easiest drive from TX.

Beaver Creek is the perfect place for the entire family, but look for the vacation to cost 50% more. You couldn't ski the whole place in 5 days plus your ticket is also good at Vail. For a week long trip, I would go there.
