    Build ideas needed.

I’ve got a Remington 700 custom deluxe 300 win mag. I’m wanting to have a semi custom shooter with little recoil.

As is the bolt is hard to open after firing. That needs to be addressed first I’m sure.

What are my options? I’m not a gun nut so I’m not well versed in all of what I should or shouldn’t expect.

I’m in Conroe. Any and all recommendations appreciated. I’d like to stay around $750 ish.

.257/ .270 weatherby .264 win mag are a couple options

$750 would get you a stock and the bolt problem fixed. You might be able to throw a trigger in there. Changing barrels or calibers is possible but not with anything else. A bartlien barrel swap would run you $500-$750.

I like the 257 too...sounds like it needs a new tube if bolt lift is heavy anyway. Just have the smith go through the action & get it all right at the same time. You got a few choices to make if going down the custom route. Take your time.

You could get the primary extraction issue fixed, a brake installed, a bedding job and an upgraded trigger for about what you have budgeted. You’d likely end up with exactly the kind of rifle you’re after.

He has a heavy bolt lift so he needs a new barrel? I’d love to hear the thought process behind that.

Anybody recommend a good reliable gunsmith that I can trust in the greater Houston area. Preferably north side.

Pete Piper with Precision Barrel Works, been in the business for a good long while. I believe he's in Hempstead or near there.

as mentioned, the 257 Wthby would be a good place to start if you kept your action. Or you could fix the hard extraction issues, sell/trade your rifle, and build what you want based on the new action specs

If your wanting to keep it fairly local, drive to Hempstead and visit Pete

likely a chamber issue & wouldn't chase a factory bbl problem...I figured some were bound to say save the $$$$, but gotta remember we have a bunch of custom builders here. I love to see folks get their first custom & was pushing it along is all.

Don't know how many I've had over the years but my first one was a .280AI & still my go to since 1994. $750 can help but if it can be swung, might as well do it right & go full custom. Not a whole lot more needed as Blake has explained numbers times.

I wouldn't find my smith based on location...there may very well be one of the best in your area, but all of mine were shipped off. We had a good one down here at the time, but better ones out there. Nobody now.
