Woodlands Texas American Bald Eagles

Nesting pair have been the Woodlands for many years. Two eaglets were hatched Christmas day and they have fledged. A few shots for January to now.

Nice shots.

Are you taking these shots near Hugh's Landing? I've think I've seen the male a few times perched in a pine tree over there with people taking pictures.

Yes, I am. The nest is across the street from the Loft church. I've been down about 4 times this season.

Very cool! Thanks for the info, I'd love to go check them out. Do you mind if I ask where you setup to get the pics? I assume they're north of Lake Front Circle?

As far as setting up, its where the eagles happen to be hanging out. They are really moving around now and will likely be gone in another week or so. Parking lot between the Loft church and the Methodist school is where people park. I never thought about the direction and would have thought west but it is north. There is a patch of woods next to the parking garage. That's where the nest is. Go to that parking lot and you will see cameras.

Thanks again Bill - I've got some time this week, if the weather cooperates I'll head out there one day and check it out. ;)b

I'm thinking of making one more trip down there this season. I thought some of these pics would be the last of this bunch but I'll likely attempt a go down there on Tuesday.

MRWHITE87 04-09-2019 04:44 PM

Oh man those are some beautiful birds. Very nice pics!

Did you make it down today, Bill? I got tied up, going to try again tomorrow.

Ended up not going and likely won't go back this season now. Birds are ranging further and aren't far from going out completely independent of mom and dad. They are fishing for themselves now according to some. Get there soon or you will end up missing them this go-round.

FriscoAg 04-10-2019 09:44 AM

I’m here - no sign of anything yet.

Also no other cameras but me. Maybe they know something I don’t. lol

I’ll keep an eye out for a little longer and see if anything pops up.

RJK70 04-10-2019 09:46 AM

Great pictures, I saw those birds near Hughes Landing about a month ago.

Casey 04-10-2019 10:06 AM

Nice work, Bill!!! Handsome birds captured perfectly.

Yeh, they (photogs) may not come until later. Look toward the church school across from the Loft. Also, they have been hanging out around the drainage behind the loft where the volleyball courts are.

They would have been present all the time then, the young ones anyway.

Those photos are outstanding. I was driving through Hughes Landing last week and saw three people set up taking pictures. I looked back that direction but didn't see anything, maybe this was it.

They'll wait most of the day also. :D

Joe, yes it is. That is the protected nest that has been there many years. They touch up/repair every year when it's time to lay the eggs.

That is what they were doing I'd guarantee it.

I believe the window is rapidly closing according to what I'm reading in a group on FB. The youngsters were spotted flying over Lake Woodlands Parkway today, likely headed to the lake. They will likely not be staying in the nest area much longer.

SFAbowhunter 04-10-2019 04:57 PM

Great shots! Birds of prey are amazing animals!

Thanks very much for the comments.

Good pics. I have no idea on the zoology of these animals but there has been a nesting pair on the lake for almost 2 decades now. I assume these adults were born on the lake and those chicks could be great grandchildren. If you have to live in town it doesn’t get much better than The Woodlands, we are blessed by nature.

I did peek and Iím off in a different direction now! We moved in to a new house two years ago and we are still decorating. We sold everything with the last house and started over. I will make up my mind tomorrow on which one itís going to be! They are all beautiful!

FriscoAg 04-12-2019 10:58 AM

I’m here now. One of the babies is in the nest. He keeps popping his head up.

Casey 04-12-2019 11:55 AM

Bill, I didn't see where you mentioned the gear you used. Can you share that bit of info?

The first two are with the Sony a7RIII and FE 100-400. The rest are with a Nikon D500 and Tamron 150-600 G2.

Edit - pic deleted.

Not sure why my photos look so grainy when I host them on TBH.

I'm learning just how difficult it is to get up close and personal with these guys, even at 600mm on a full frame, very tough.

Nice! I have friends on Livingston that see them regularly at their place. You're right about the distance. Can you imagine trying to get them with 200 or 300mm?

My Sony equipment is limited to 400mm plus 1.4x converter. Even with 42mp body sometimes it's not enough even cropping.

They are generally near bodies of water in Texas since they tend to eat fish more than anything.

Stolle 06-10-2019 01:10 PM

I drive by there a couple times a week, but never have spotted them. Wonder if they moved on?

blatallic 06-10-2019 01:38 PM

Awesome, Awesome photography...

One flew by our RV while we were at my father's property in Kennard. It was flying low and it was an awesome thing to witness.

Matt, they are still spotted here and there but are rarely at the nest site after the young ones get out on their own.
