New fireplace

Here is our old fire place.
We never really liked the gray marble. I built this mantel many years ago and it's time for a change.
After giving the front of the house a facelift, I had some stone left over and some brick left over from the smokehouse. So I had to use all these leftovers for something.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0425a59b97.jpg

Now need to build a wall strong enough to hold the stone.
3/4" plywood framed with cedar.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...711ef90eb6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b4b9d88e9c.jpg

Oh yeah, this isn't a real fireplace anymore.
We might add a gas stove later.
We'll see...

The mantel is a 2" slab of cedar.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7834aae7c4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...daa51be53b.jpg

Framing all finished, time for some brick. Well sort of brick. The brick in the floor is some old brick donated by another tbh member. I liked the old look.
The brick inside is a veneer, real brick just 1/2" thick. The veneer was purchased from Amazon. Yall should have seen the little UPS girl carrying 100 lbs of brick veneer up the steps!

I used a thin set mortar for the veneer right on the plywood. Hope this holds up. They said it would at YouTube university.
I guess I'll be remodeling again in a couple years if they were wrong! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7dd08409d5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2f57e23b64.jpg

Now for the hardie board backing for the stone.
I'll come back to this again in a bit.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ed3b564d8c.jpg

Ok, stone backer board finished over the arch and started putting wire mesh on then cover the whole thing with mortar.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...308c48ef6f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...833bd0ca42.jpg

I grossly miscounted the veneer and had to order more from Amazon.
This time the UPS driver asked me what was in the box that weighed so much!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d7c3b5d5de.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...48da5afac8.jpg

Wow, very nice Charlie! You are a talented guy!!!

Very nice overhaul you have going on there. I built an outdoor fireplace years ago and swore I would never do another due to the work involved.

Fast forward to today and I am having trouble trying to find someone to do a stone alcove/wall for my wood burning stove in my barndo. Looks like I'll be doing this one myself too. My mantle is a 7ft long and 4" thick slab of oak.

Looks like you're not far from finishing, congrats on the build.

I bet this time you will enjoy the build more.
I've found that the older I get, I gain more patience and therefore slow down and enjoy my projects more.
