So we've finished another year and what a year it has been, from dove and teal seasons, all the way through summertime fishing. We have shared our good times and told our stories. We have given advice and received it while we searched for our elusive prey. Those of us who spend our time visiting this thread have become a family and I personally look forward to getting on here every day and seeing what is going on in the world of TBH whitney. I hope all of you do and continue to as well. This year I expect to be just as fun and vibrant and full of good game as every other year I've been on this great forum.
Dove season is only about 2 weeks away and teal only 10 days after that. soon enough it will be our favorite time of year. The time when we get to get out early and sit in a tree or ground blind in the cool morning air waiting on that first early season buck to come down the trail and into our shooting lane. Here's hoping everyone has a great season this year and there are plenty of LDP's posted on this thread. So it's time to go out get your license and get ready to get your permits on the 23'rd. Tune your bows, get out and practice and let's make it great Here's my first picture of a buck this year it's hard to tell how big he is but it's hopefully something to get everyone in the mood ;)b

Ender 08-15-2016 06:26 PM

Ender 08-15-2016 06:30 PM

ugh misspelled whitney in the title and it won't let me edit it out

Texas Grown 08-15-2016 06:41 PM

I didn't notice. But my brain did pause a few seconds when I was reading it. :D.

Storm 08-15-2016 07:10 PM

Great start Ender and hope you guys get to connect on some of Whitney many game animals.

Jesus is Coming 08-15-2016 08:24 PM

Every year someone does something "special" like that :D.

Hope ya'll all have a good year! This weather is awesome! I'm kinda curious if they'll open up the gates on Whitney or not with this rain.

http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/whitney/ If you wanted to know the lake levels!

Texas Grown 08-16-2016 06:57 PM

Kirby, I just can't see them opening the big gates. It'd take a lot of flooding before they would do that. And the W lake is already 3 foot low. If an when they do, I expect it to be just a temporary opening to flush the area a little. Or to generate electricity from one of the generators for a little while. They did that quite q bit a few years ago. It really dropped the lake level, just a little bit each day, over time.

Razorback01 08-16-2016 07:06 PM

I may make a trip or two for dove, but I'll probably look elsewhere for deer until maybe a couple of day trips late year. No campgrounds, Razorback and wife are out.

Storm 08-16-2016 07:15 PM

I'm thinking about camping over at that Indian trail place or the state park if they are open.

homegrown 08-16-2016 07:15 PM

Bow is tuned & ready to go. Got a new custom string put on it a couple weeks ago & the Black Hornets are stacking just like my field tips out to 60. Been hiking with a loaded pack to try to get my legs ready for Colorado. Will be my first elk hunt & to say I'm stoked about it is an understatement. Got a week of dove season before we leave and the birds are already stacking up around town. Gonna be a good way to open the fall hunting season. Headed down to the W soon to check on my mineral spots & start putting corn out. Got a couple bucks from last year that I let walk & am hoping they are still in the same areas. With the rain we have had & another year of age they should be ready for the taking this year. Hope everybody has a successful & safe season in the woods.

coop 08-16-2016 08:46 PM

As of 8:30 pm it has rained 3" so far on the Bosque side of W.

coop 08-17-2016 04:12 PM

As of 1:00 pm today total rain fall was 5.5" at Lakeside. It is a muddy mess but we sure needed some rain. Small bucks were playing in the rain yesterday and today. Saw several 1.5 year olds with most supporting spikes, 3 pts, 4pts and 1 big 6. Saw 2 decent 8 points but one is to narrow.

Maybe it will be a good season now that we've got some rain to help bring out the browse.

Ender 08-17-2016 10:29 PM

I saw several out playing today on my way home one looked like a 4 point but I didn't slow down to get a good look. But there were plenty of deer out and I agree it gives me hope for the season. I'm pretty excited about the extended dove season too, last year the dove didn't really show up down here until after the season ended

randytunesmith 08-18-2016 09:20 AM

This will be my first year bow huntin Whitney. I'm not new to the area or huntin, ive just been focusing on ducks only for about 5 years now. I have family on pretty much every side of the lake so im familiar with the area. I've tried to read as much about huntin down here on previous threads. I have spent plenty of time scoutin and still have some to do. Lookin forward to being part of this thread and having a good season out here. Good luck to all of you...

Texas Grown 08-18-2016 06:23 PM

Welcome Randy. :)

Kirby, guess they must have read this thread. And opened a gate just to prove me wrong :D.

W lake elevation: 530.07 ft., Normal 533.00, Water release = 2064 CFS
A lake Elevation: 538.79 ft., Normal 537.50, Water release = 2 CFS

spacemonkey 08-19-2016 09:52 AM

Just a heads up for the boaters. I launched at Nolan park yesterday and went upriver towards Hamm creek. I saw a number of obstructions in the river channel. Most noticeably at the Kimble bend bridge. There are sunken logs under the bridge in the river channel. I also narrowly missed a log maybe half a mile upriver from the bridge near the big sign marking private property on the West Bank of the river. The log was maybe 75 yards out from the shore and pretty much in the river channel. It was completely submerged and I luckily missed it by about a foot. I would have marked it if I had something to mark it with.

Texas Grown 08-19-2016 07:41 PM

Thanks spacemonkey. :)
I could see from the bridge it was pretty treacherous along the shore line going outward. But haven't been there yet since the flood.

Bet it's loaded with catfish! :)

XBOW STALKER 08-20-2016 09:51 AM

Close call space monkey be safe out there

Ender 08-20-2016 02:25 PM

went out and did a little checking things out today and on the way home I saw a single teal for those of you who are interested; I don't know or care much about them but I know some of you do. also saw a whole flock of canadian geese, though the season for them is still a ways off

Kenny B 08-20-2016 06:25 PM

Texas Grown 08-20-2016 07:17 PM

Ender 08-20-2016 09:29 PM

Texas Grown 08-20-2016 11:03 PM

Actually, there is an early Canada Goose season 10-25 Sept. in the eastern zone. To bad the W and A lakes are in the western zones :D. No early season there.

Trust me that was the first thing I did when I got home, check the season dates. I had seen that early season date before and thought it might have been for this area.

Storm 08-21-2016 01:57 PM

Coop how's the lake looking today?

coop 08-21-2016 02:08 PM

I haven't actually been near the water in the last couple of days but it is plenty muddy around this area. If the rain quits it'll be soaked up in a couple or three days. The deer have really been moving during the day the last few days.

Storm 08-22-2016 12:50 PM

No problem.

Texas Grown 08-22-2016 02:27 PM

Looks like a couple semi nice days coming up. :)

Stink Bait 08-23-2016 06:20 AM

Don't the permit come out today?

Storm 08-23-2016 06:48 AM

Yes this is the first day you can get one. If you hunted last year you can do it online as for me I have to show up in person to get a permit. As per a conversation I hade with them you can get a permit even if you didn't turn in a survey this time and only this time.

Razorback01 08-23-2016 07:06 AM

Got my permit on line yesterday morning and was close to the 200th permit issued.

Texas Grown 08-23-2016 09:38 AM

Looks like I got something else to do today, print permits. :)

Storm 08-23-2016 12:51 PM

Hey Mike you have anything to do on Saturday, Kenny and I are gonna go scout.

Kenny B 08-23-2016 03:29 PM

Is there any good apps for Android to track your steps and show u where u been like a path thanks
