I'm over in melissa and would like to start hunting lavon. Shoot me a pm and I'll join in when I can.

TxAg 10-15-2014 08:37 AM

You're gone need night vision

cripsol 10-15-2014 08:40 AM

Get a remote light and find out if they still let you use hand corn. Last year I had them come in every night but always got busted before I could get a shot. My dad went 3 times with me and was able to shoot 2 pigs. Tons of hogs. Lots of deer too but you can only watch them.

TexAg2002 10-15-2014 08:44 AM

following. keep saying I need to get out there and get my permit but havent yet.

sircharles4848 10-15-2014 02:08 PM

Following as well. Me and few hunting buddies got our permits for this year, but haven't been out there yet and looking for any tips as well.

TexAg2002 10-15-2014 02:43 PM

So is the free permit all you need or need the ($48)public land access permit too?

JustinJ 10-15-2014 02:46 PM

Just need a lavon permit from the office in Wylie. Don't need the APH. You cannot bait. No hand Corning. Up north of the bridge you can use shotguns now. Everything else is archery only for pigs.

sircharles4848 10-15-2014 03:19 PM

What do you mean by "remote light", I didn't think it was legal to spotlight on Lavon.....am I wrong?

You can not spotlight but you can use artificial light to be able to see your hunting area.

Last year they allowed hand Corning as long as you didn't have any feeders set up. Just check with the ranger. Also, no trail cams.

TexAg2002 10-15-2014 06:48 PM

So no stabilizer light?

ttubudd 10-15-2014 07:02 PM

I've been wanting to go check it out too. let me know and i'll meet up with ya for a walk-about

pm sent

Jtrage 10-15-2014 08:11 PM

I'm interested and in mckinney if you need anymore guys.

ttubudd 10-15-2014 09:20 PM

I may cruise over there on Sunday morning & walk around a bit. Never have set foot on Lavon land. If anyone wants to go, shoot me a PM

Gefune 10-15-2014 09:26 PM

I went quite a bit this summer to scout with my bow. I saw a lot of fresh sign around unit 3-5. I probably went up there 6 or 7 times and scouted a whole lot, both early am and evening and I never did see an actual hog. I saw quite a few deer, unfortunately they are off limits at Lavon... Be careful around any creek areas, definitely saw a few snakes around those areas.

Tpayne 10-20-2014 11:16 AM

Difinantly interested in checking it out to see what I can get out there.

Nah, went to a wedding Saturday night and my buddy Johnnie Walker decided that I should sleep in.

MisplacedTexan 10-26-2014 08:25 AM

I'd be interested in checking Lavon out too. I just got my permit and have never been out there yet.

shawkwave 11-11-2014 08:19 PM

Are there any pigs in any of the southeastern units?

Kirby86 11-11-2014 08:28 PM

You can pick any unit and find hogs. Now... whether or not it will be so thick that you can't shoot is another question entirely. I'll be out there on a weekly basis once deer season is over.

Some of the units you don't have to go too far to find sign. Just make sure you have a flashlight, and your phone is on full charge because its one of the easiest places to get lost in that I've hunted.

I got lost out there for 3 hours one night when I forgot my flashlight. Kept following a creek, but didn't realize that it fed into three other ones. I'm also pretty positive that some of the areas closer to houses get hit pretty regularly by the locals.

TC_ 11-14-2014 02:55 PM

I want to give this a try as well. Let me know when anyone goes and I'll try not to be the guy that trips and stumbles in the woods like a drunk.

s1rGr1nG0 11-14-2014 03:11 PM

I just bought my first bow. How does one get into one of the public hunts? I would like to look into it for future reference when I get more practice and I'm ready to hit the field.

kikn 11-14-2014 04:05 PM

I took my friend out there for his first ever hunt. Went in mainly just to scout. I found a pig trail and scat. Followed it to a bunch of big sows. He gotta shot of with his bow at about 30 yards. She was about 160 # and left two piglet behind that we caught by hand.

I know a good spot but you have to swim to get there. I call it hog island..

Chad2682 11-14-2014 04:20 PM

My cousin and I hunt regularly out there, just pm me with your contact info and we can meet up and give them hell.

jkelbe 11-14-2014 04:28 PM

Love to try it. Need to buy a public tag.

I would love to make a day of it with someone.

Jayt22 11-14-2014 04:29 PM

I'd like to do some hog hunting!

No need to buy anything, just go to the Corp office by the dam and get your permit. It's free

Thanks. Maybe after season.

I would love to eventually try public land deer hunts, but thought this would be a great way to try out PL.

mdmorrow 11-17-2014 08:50 AM

I'm down to go try it out there sometime after the regular hunting season is over with. I've got NV and thermal as well and I'm in McKinney most of the time.

tonyterry 12-03-2014 04:12 PM

I go your way all the time to see my little girls, would like to hunt lavon. Maybe we can hook up one weekend and get some hogs.

txfireman2004 01-04-2015 11:57 AM

Anyone been out here lately? Just got my permit and thinking about at least scouting it out tomorrow. Which zones are you guys hunting? Based on the TPWD success reports from 13', zones 6, 2, and 13 had the best yields... and in 12', zones 10,5, and 7(in that order).

txfireman2004 01-07-2015 09:56 AM

Did some scouting in zone two. Lot's of sign, but no actual hogs seen. Very thick vegetation that's pretty rough getting through. Looks like they are just finishing up a sewer line that cuts along the edge. Saw a couple of workers later in the morning. Also came across feeders, campsites, tree stands, ground blinds, and cut 4-wheeler trails. With all the obvious pressure along with a few traps I saw on private land bordering COE, im thinking night hunting is about the only way to get on some hogs. Thinking about trying the northern zones. Per google maps, the terrain looks a lot more open.

lakamiin 01-07-2015 10:18 AM

Txfireman, I just got my permit too but haven't been out yet. Thinking about this weekend. PM me if you want a partner to go with.

SFAbowhunter 01-09-2015 09:33 AM

I'll definitely be going out there a lot more with me building a house in Melissa. There are tons of hogs out there for sure. And lots of nice deer. If anyone wants to give it a whirl shoot me a PM.

lakamiin 01-09-2015 02:45 PM

I don't have enough posts to PM. I'm really getting the itch, even with the weather... I'd like to check out zone 9 or 13 this weekend.

whitetailtrail 01-09-2015 02:50 PM

I'm in Allen and interested as well. It would be cool to get several groups going out hunting

SFAbowhunter 01-09-2015 03:00 PM

I'll be going out there probably after the deer season ends in Arkansas at the end of February.

txfireman2004 01-10-2015 11:41 AM

Not enough posts for PMs yet.

Went out to zone 2 the other night. The Gatorade in my pack froze solid, but there was still some activity. Heard and smelled some hogs pass nearby, but I never actually saw any. Did see coyotes, armadillos, a skunk, and an owl. I was posted up near a clearing along a game trail that had the most, and freshest sign. No luck. Going to try again soon. May go deeper this time.

txfireman2004 01-10-2015 11:45 AM

I know spot lighting isn't allowed, but I do have a green bow mounted light that I only use to light the area when I take a shot. Is this considered spotlighting? Not sure how else to take a hog at night with a bow. I also have lighted nocks and a sight light. I've got gen 1 night vision but I've found it to be pretty much useless.

robster1213 01-11-2015 08:22 AM

There aren't any laws that say you can't use a spotlight for hogs. If you were hunting deer, you would be in trouble. Get out there and put some pork on the ground.

Chosen010 01-11-2015 09:24 AM

I might head out there today and scout around a little.. Debating it heavily with this weather.. Sure anxious to stick my first hog though!

lakamiin 01-11-2015 01:51 PM

I thought about it this morning, but it is kinda nasty out today. Settled for the range, instead.

Chosen010 01-12-2015 11:07 PM

Got out and got my permit today... Talked to the rangers a bit. Got some tips on where to hunt. Spent 30 min poking around on the of the sections...

Now I can't wait to get out there and actually do some hunting. Area I saw showed fresh signs of rooting and rutting... Just gotta get the time to get out there now..

Chosen010 01-13-2015 08:02 AM

duplicate... oops

txfireman2004 01-13-2015 01:41 PM

What areas did the rangers say are best? If you don't mind me asking. The ranger I talked to really wasn't much help.

lakamiin 01-14-2015 01:40 PM

Shoot me an email lakawhat@gmail.com

Chosen010 01-17-2015 07:20 AM

I'll PM you guys what little info I got. I don't want to post on here for any and every yahoo to see when doing a google search...

I'm planning on heading out tomorrow morning early to stalk around. He talked like I could stalk during the day and find piggies. Could have been old or bad info, I dunno. I want to get to know the area a little before I try to do a night hunt, but that's coming soon too. Probably have to wait for a full moon since I don't have a bow light or anything...

Chosen010 01-18-2015 01:26 PM

So I was out there this morning stalking between 2575 and 380 and I came across someone in a pop up blind...

If that was you, I apologize if I disturbed anything you were watching. I saw some tracks, roots and ruts but couldn't tell how fresh any of it was. I didn't see or hear anything except the duck hunters going crazy.

Walked for about 5 hrs today and a little disappointed but I am sure it happens more often than not.
