    Need glass for Football Games

I need a lens for use during next season's High School Games (I am sure there will be plenty of other uses, but this is the excuse I am sticking with... )

Camera is a Nikon D40. I currently do not own a lens over a 55mm. I will be shooting from the stands and I have decent seats.

One important piece of info: I am cheap and don't plan to spend a lot this lens. Probably looking to keep the purchase to around $200 or so.

I am considering the 55-200 AFS DX VR as well as some of the AF platform lenses (I am not afraid of the focus ring, but would like some help from the camera in getting correct exposure).

So the big question, which lens to go after?

I don't think you will be happy with the results of the 55-200 F4-5.6 AFS VR lens, especially under stadium lights from that distance. I know you were wanting a less expensive lens, but this would get it done for considerably more than $200.

Sigma and Tamron make same spec lenses for considerably less. To get good pics, you need to be on the sideline.

You need the faster lenses for the action and light conditions. I am by no means an expert and the experts will step in and expand on my limited knowledge soon.

Like Jason said, you aren't going to be too happy with the 55-200 unless they are daytime games. I shoot a D300 with the Nikkor 70-200 f2.8, and sometimes it's not fast enough. High school fields have notoriously poor lighting.
That being said, if you ask, most High School coaches will let you on the sidelines if you stay well out of the way.
I also bribe my son's coach with a cd of the best pics that I get throughout the season. (I also sell cd's to the other players parents).
If you do get sideline access, a fast prime lens will get you some good shots, without being too expensive.

For a few examples, check out the sports shots set on my Flickr page.

      Good luck!

Another thought. If it's just for a game or two, rent the 70-200 f2.8. It'll be a lot cheaper that way.

Since most high school games are at night with poor lighting you won't be too happy with that particular lens as mentioned above. I would second the rent one to find one that works for you then purchase. If you can keep the F stop at about 4 you may get OK pics but that would limit the zoom you have available. You would need a zoom of 200-400 for good pictures from the stands.

If you get side line access just keep in mind most outdoor sports don't want flashes too close to the athletes as it distracts and blinds.

Thanks for the info... I was specifically trying to not have to use a flash. I was hoping that a well-lit stadium would give me other options besides springing for the expensive glass. Sounds like that may not be the case after all.

This is the next lens that I want. It'll be a while though.
Oops! I mean the USA version.

Scotty, they couldn't make that a F2-4? F2 on the 200 end would be nice.

Just to give you a possible point of reference...

This was a pretty early game. In the month of September (before the time change) at about 6pm. I do believe the stadium lights were on, but still some daylight too.

                            Lens: EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM plus a 1.4x extender

                            ISO 250, f/7.1, shutter speed 1/500

Note that I was using a 1.4x extender. Focal length = 200m x 1.4 = 280mm. Shot from the stands. A flash is worthless from this distance.

Yes, those are your Rockwall Yellowjackets! I know the glass I referenced above is a lot more than you want to spend. I am posting it more to reference the aperture setting, ISO and shutter speed. If you were on the sidelines instead of in the stands, I would think you could drop the 1.4x extender and still get about the same shot from that closer distance. You would need a higher ISO setting, but I don't think you'd necessarily need a super fast lens to get action-stopping shutter speeds without getting too grainy.
