    Traditional 3d shoot ideas...

Fellow Trad shooters, I am wanting to put together a traditional archery 3d shoot at my local 3d course in Pottsboro, TX right next to Hagerman NWR. I really like my local course and would like to put together a fun shoot. I really enjoyed the TBOT experiences I have had, and in no way want to get in the way of anything they are doing, scheduling or otherwise...

First thing, if I were to put on a shoot that far into North Texas, would there be any interest from this group in making that drive? is a 2 day shoot something that would add appeal or would one day be preferred?

Second thing, what is it that YOU would like to see in a course? Something that you have experienced at a course that you really like, or something that you have always wanted that no one else is doing?

Third and final question, what prize or prizes would you like to see for the winner of each class?

I'd for sure have interest in attending. As for what targets, a moving target is always fun. I hope you get it going.

I like to see targets in a natural environment, obstacles just like real hunting scenarios. Not on a wide cut lane with no brush or trees around. Yes a moving target is a blast!

        Traditional 3d shoot ideas...

Here’s what I tell anyone that asks me for advice on setting up 3D courses for trad shooters - err on the side of easier rather than harder. Most likely, the same guys are gonna be at the top of any given shoot no matter the difficulty. If you make most of the distances real long or shots very difficult, those same guys will still be at the top, but a lot of other guys will go home cussing and not wanting to come back to your range because of the difficulty and losing/breaking a bunch of expensive arrows.

There’s nothing wrong with having a few real long or difficult shots, but try to keep the average distance reasonable for everyone.

        That’s my 2 cents worth.

Also, I doubt I would make your shoot as I’m 400 miles away. A lot of other folks will though.

To me they need to be all shots one might take hunting.
The whole deernan thing with animals quartering to you and shots through brush and limbs I "hope" the arrow makes it through aren't shots I'd take on game. Through the trees, yeah sure. But where part of the scoring zone is covered up no matter how you access the stake not so much.

Steep downward shots are in short supply on most 3D ranges I've shot. But we all do a lot of hunting from tree stands and tower blinds for deer. If you can find a way to safely simulate an 8 yard shot from 30 feet up, that would be awesome!

I've been known to drive that far to chase hogs on a hogless lease before, so I can't say I wouldn't come shoot a tourney like that. But it's all about whether I have free time to make shoots personally.

I like that idea! and I know exactly where I can set that up at too!

and that was the first time in 2 years I had been over there and not been able to get on pigs when I tried! EMBARRASSING!!!

Hardly nobody hunts 30’ up! Most folks are 12’-16’ up or so. 8yds at 30’ high makes for a very tough shot that most folks would mess up. Not saying it can’t be done, and not saying it shouldn’t be done at a 3D shoot. Just saying it’s a disaster waiting to happen in a hunting situation!!!!

Oops, that was meant to be 20' not 30'.

But on the flip side, I think 30' and 8 yards is a totally normal shot opportunity for mule deer hunting in CO. I'd love to be able to practice that shot more regularly!

Try to get some camping or lodging nearby and have a nice dinner or cookout type thing for everyone after the days shoot.
Some of the best prizes at our shoots up here are things made by locals. Raffles go over well too.
We won a wood stove that a guy made and we've been using it in our wall tent for about 15 years.
A fire ring would be a nice prize or raffle as well, maybe a disc cooker.

One of the nice shoots up here gives belt buckles to the winners of each class. A cash pay out of the entry fee would be good too.
They have novelty shoots for cash too, running animal and closest to bullseye on a way long shot. Aerial targets are popular if flu flus are used, hill for backdrop is nice for finding the arrows.
