    Dfw fur work

I'm currently dealing with a large number of coons. I m curious about turning one or several into a scarf or something for the Mrs. Who does that kind of work? I've never done any tanning or taxi work so I m extremely ignorant here. All advice appreciated.

Coons with the best fur come from cold climate. In Wisconsin the best furs from coons are around the middle of November. They have layers of fur and in November their fur isn't "worn" yet from rubbing on the ground and whatnot.

We trap and use to sell coon hides. For making clothing you would need to get a soft tan. The cost around here would be about $50.00 per hide for that process if you didn't flesh the hide yourself. If you properly flesh it you would probably save about $10.00.

You could skin your own hide and clean off all the fat you can and then salt it with plain salt like you would get at a feed mill. Then after salting a hide you have to dry it until the hide is hard. In that state it can sit for years and stay good. Then you would bring it or send it to a tannery to have a soft tan done.

the tanning solutions you buy from cabelas and such will not make for a very soft skin. They work fine for tanning a deer mount or a hide to hang on something but it is nearly impossible to get a soft tan you could wear as clothing from this type of tanning method.

Outstanding work there. You'll see everything from coons to leopard skins. Great guy to do business with. His hides/rugs are the best I've seen.

Might check Moyle's Mink Tannery also.

I had him tan a coon hide a year ago and it was nice. Cost was just over $70 for tanning only. It took about 8 months to get it back (it was shortly after deer season so I assume he was backlogged from all the deer hides)

It was the first thing my 4 year old killed so had to cough it up. She loves it!
