    What to plant?

Was over putting out hand corn today(better late than never)& was driving around see what all my cousin had bulldozed off. Found a spot that he did that was straight thru the woods from from new fence he built. Its like 50yds long by 15yds wide. Heavy woods on east, south and west sides with north end opening to a bottom. Already a little green stuff growing with quite a few deer tracks. Was thinking maybe oats, just broadcasting them by hand...thoughts? Several good trees for two person ladder stand to hunt it, but also thinking about just tucking in by some trees on the ground and brushing it in a little for kids to rifle hunt it.

Pinto beans are a deer magnet until they eat them all up or it freezes.

            Several ideas/issues

            1. Shade.... seems like a lot
            2. PH .... if it was wooded the pH is probably horrible for growing and my soil test took 7 weeks
            3. Cattle.... if deer eat it cows will destroy it

            4. Dirt.... the reason the deer tracks are there is fresh dirt. They love it and are curious. Probably not a normal route or feed destination location, just new dirt

I’ll hunt plowed dirt over corn anytime!

But if you just want to plant ... go to TSC and get a bag of whatever. Rye, wheat, oats will probably germinate. Probably won’t thrive, but be green

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I'd be wasting money planting anything then. Just hope to catch them passing thru would be better. Its kind of a red clay mix.

Yep, if you have cows there forget about planting anything.

Got enough sunlight for a solar fence charger? Could put a hotwire up to keep the cows out. Deer would just jump it.
