    Texas Deer Genetics & Age

I've been fortunate to hunt some very good places in Texas. From my personal experience with them is that ALL were able to produce 140 inch deer or better. This is from 3 counties in the South Plains (Dickens, Crosby, Motley), 2 counties in Southeast Central Texas (Limestone, Falls), and 1 in East Texas (Walker). Now on some of these places it took years of protein and the right amount of rain but it happened. On most of the places referenced above I could say 150 inches or better but not all have topped that number yet. I'm posting this because I hear folks all the time say the deer aren't big in a particular county or area. Well let's be honest, because most of them don't reach maturity. Now it's a fact that not every buck will reach 140 inches, but there will be some in each county/area that can if maturity is reached. Just some interesting facts I thought I'd share about different areas across our great state

It would be interesting to see what would happen if we shortened rifle season down to one month, just one year. See how many young bucks make it to the next.

Oh me too. I would love to see Newton county go archery only.

Everything East of I-45 should go Archery only every other year. We’d see a huge drop in hunter participation, then a huge bounce back when they saw those 6-7 year old bucks! Lol

Harley Burg (spelling?) suggested in the 60s to not take any bucks for 3 years. That would let the population even out some and of course bucks would mature. In the 60s in east Texas the buck to doe ratio was way off.
Does anyone remember the Saturday show with him?

All I can say is, us that hunt Newton County public land(Archery only) saw the improvement and the genetic capability that county has.

I would like to see a shortened rifle season unless you are MLD. Encourage more to get into the program for better overall management.

Antler restrictions in Limestone have been tremendous. There are a LOT more deer now. We've taken two 140 inch plus bucks off one place with ZERO protein.

Unless it's a very big ranch, managing for trophy bucks without a high fence is generally an exercise in futility. Ask me how I know.

This isn't a management/culling debate, mainly just letting them get mature and feed them Also that's a horrible mindset but I realize some neighbors suck.

I would agree but say that often times the problems in that situation are neighbors. Not necessarily managing for “Trophy” deer, but more mature deer seems to be a better way to achieve “trophies”. There are many places across Texas that are 3000 acre + low fence places that do very well at managing age structures, and in turn have some trophies every year. So if we cut down the rifle season or went archery only for one year, maybe added a doe tag for some counties, we may see some really positive results.
