Yamaha motor problems, asking for help?

Long story short, 2006 Yamaha 150hpdi. I’ve looked up everything, what seems to be an over heat alarm comes on when low idle, pulling a tube and or just at an idle. Constant alarm, shut it down and as soon as I turn the key, it comes on immediately (without the engine on), so that makes me think it’s not oil pressure. I’ve replaced the water pump (impeller), thermostats and all seals. When I run it at high speeds, no problem. Is it a poppet valve, sensor, what else could it be? Any help before I take it in to the mechanic.

Unplug the heat sensors in the heads and see if the alarm quits. Just a wild guess but you might have a bad sensor.

Will the bad sensor make the pisser start shooting hot as soon as the alarm comes on? Forgot to mention that, water coming out is cool alternating warm, as soon as the alarm comes on, it’s boiling hot.

      Thanks in advance.

        Where are the heat sensors?

I did a google search and typed in “signs Yamaha HPDI running hot” the first thing that came up was on the hull truth. Guy pretty much listed exactly what you did, including all labor done. During his adventure he blew a ecu fuse but had a mechanic check it out and found out the screen on lower unit was installed backwards. A ton of other people suggested cleaning the head out since it could have some build up blocking water from cooling the engine. The screen on backwards apparently causes a bubble which prevents enough water running through the system. Sorry if this was pointless by googling it. I’ve got an 04 and like to read up when similar issues come up so if I run into a problem I kinda already have an idea.

I have a similar problem. It is the flow sensor going bad. If your indicator stream is boiling hot you have a problem. I believe that motor has water strainers type filters in line. They may be partially clogged.

Well now it sounds like overheating. Waterpump, thermostats, corrosion could all be the problem. It cools when you get the revs up because the poppet valves open. Which I believe on your motor are actually the t-stats themselves. There is no water filter except for the pickup screen in the lower unit.

Indicator stream doesn’t get hot until the alarm comes on, I’m going to change the poppet valve and see if that works. Then move to the sensors if it doesn’t.

sounds like the poppet valves are working. They open with higher rpms and water pressure. Pm sent

Change the waterpump and lower unit fluids.

water pump should be changed every couple years.

Agree but a good stream is a good stream and bad pump doesn’t explain stream changing from cool to steaming hot.

If you can’t get figured out the guys at Boerne Marine are great guys. Turn around is pretty quick and reasonably. I only take my boat there.

I changed out the water pump and thermostats.
