Cottonseed Good for Deer, Vet says more research needed

Did anyone see this article in Livestock Weekly (or anywhere else)? The gossypol poisoning part was interesting.

Cottonseed Good for Deer, Vet Says More Study Needed

....calves, lambs and kid goats don’t yet have a functioning rumen thus they are

susceptible to gossypol poisoning. It stands to reason that it could also be toxic to whitetail

fawns. He also noted that there have been complications in hunting dogs when dog feed is

top-dressed with cottonseed meal in an effort to keep weight on them during the hunting

    season.

Horses, however, are “uniquely insensitive” but not resistant to gossypol toxicity, he said.

Adult ruminants are “fairly” resistant as well as there are all kinds of compounds, living and

non-living in the rumen liquor that can buffer all kinds of things. In fact, a toxic dose in

adult ruminants is six to seven times less than what it is for pigs. Hilton added that toxicity

in adult ruminants may be different for different species and for different sizes of those

    species. ....

i live in cotton country out west

these deer eat round-up and other chemical enhanced cotton plants leaves and seed almost all year
they are bigger than the non-ag area deer and ask the farmers if the numbers are suffering due to a long life of raiding there crops

i used to buy in to the debate, until i moved here long ago and reality and common sense kicked me in the face....

just saying lets open our eyes wider that ye ol' computer screen and our need to feel like a major research project is needed

and all have an awesome day

I’ve never seen deer use a cotton field. That’s interesting

When I was in college it was thought cotton seed made deer sterile but now that some more testing has been done it doesn’t seem to effect them as much as cattle. On our ranch it helps them more to bulk and you will get better antler growth from other proteins. We feed both and have fed cottonseed year around and we don’t seem to have any problems with our fawn crop.

First it was that it would lower sperm motility so they wouldn't be born.

Now its that it will kill them once they are born.

            hah

Fed cottonseed year round last year in the worst drought in 10 years... they hammered it all deer season.

Reports im getting is that we are seeing lots of heavy bred does. Guess that solves that at least for us.

I read years ago how cottonseed could sterilize a bull but never thought about it on deer.

Perhaps the glossypol levels aren't high enough to impact deer

My understanding is that it depends on what percentage of their total diet the cottonseed is. The greater the percentage, the more likely it is to cause sterility.

It will kill them all and make them all sterile. Everyone stop feeding it ASAP

Then it will be cheaper and easier for me to get to harm my own herd

Been feeding it for 10 plus years & so far I have not had any issues w mortality of young fawns or sterile bucks that I could tell. If only it would kill coyotes.

We have been feeding cottonseed year round for the last 5 years, and we have 4 vets on our lease.

They killed our cotton seed feeders in Falfurrias from February to June. We had a dry spell and the place resembled a desert. Hogs and cattle were skin and bones but our deer herd was fat and happy. We’ve since gotten unbelievable rainfall and the land looks incredible. They still hit the cotton seed a bit but natural forage is plentiful and feeders aren’t high on their list.
It did exactly what we wanted, supplemented nutrition/protein to get through the harsh dry times.

As long as they have natural forage to go along with cottonseed there is not a problem but if they were in a pen with nothing to eat but cottonseed then that's when they may present a problem. Too much of anything is probably not good except for one thing I can think of right now. People been feeding cottonseed to deer for over 30 years and there are still fawns being born every spring.
