I have a friend who has 600 acres in Houston County. He said if I got a feeder up and running I can bow hunt it next year during bow season and he will take his grand children hunting during rifle season. I may take him up on it just curious as to what people are seeing in the area. Out side of Grapeland

I have been hunting Houston County, near Houston County Lake for my 5 year deer hunting career and completely honest, I don't see a lot of deer. At least not what other East Texas TBH'rs are showing on cameras. Plenty of hogs and at least that gives something to sling a skewer at.
The property is owned by a friend who no longer hunts and is nice enough to let me hunt for free. That is huge for me, cause I am still new to deer hunting and don't make enough afford a lease.
I have three feeders that throw corn all year long, more often during the season, but the property is not conducive for food plots so that might be one of my issues.
If you can hunt it for free and have ability to setup plots, that is a great thing. You might have better luck then me. Also wouldn't hurt to throw up a few game cameras this season to see what is going on at the property and see if its worth wild for next year.

I agree. If I had the opportunity to hunt a place for free, I would set up some feeders and put out some cameras. At least that would let me know if it is worth more investment or not. You can get feeders for $70-$80 bucks at Academy. Toss up some inexpensive cameras, and boom! You're scouting! Worse case scenario, you don't have any animals to hunt. But you'll never know unless you try.

The deer are hitting the acorns hard right now. Not unusual to see 10-20 deer at a time 30 yds from my bedroom window eating acorns. Also, every morning and evening there is easily that same amount at my feeder. I see way more deer on my private property than I do on my hunting lease. Oh.... this is just outside Grapeland also.
Many of them bed down next to the barn at night.
